I hope after the Ace of cakes was over tonight (or before if this was a repeat and I don't know it
) ya'll got to see the Good Eats with Alton. The show was all about Vanilla......very interesting. Alton is SO CUTE. I know, I find many people cute....but he is smart too, which makes him all the cuter!!!
I love Alton! It was interesting what he said about avoiding mexican vanillas at all cost since they can contain harmful ingredients. I remember a long thread a while back about this and other threads where people were talking about getting boatloads of vanilla from Mexico. Not this chickie!
I remember that thread, it was not too long ago. The chemical they were referring to is coumarin. Here's a quote from Wikipedia:
"Coumarin is a chemical compound found in many plants, notably in high concentration in the tonka bean, woodruff, and bison grass. It has a sweet scent, readily recognised as the scent of newly-mown hay. It has clinical value as the precursor for several anticoagulants, notably warfarin....Coumarin is often found in tobacco products and artificial vanilla substitutes, though it has been banned as a food additive in numerous countries since the mid-20th century because it is moderately toxic to the liver and kidneys."

I LOVE ALTON! But I fell asleep at the first commercial break
Has anyone noticed that the Food Network has insanely long commercial breaks?? They don't have them often which is nice but when they do they are a doozy, I can't stay awake through them that late at night LOL.
Yeah, and it's always the same 6 or 7 commercials....BORING. But, I had never seen the one with the guy ice skating with the lobster before. It was HILARIOUS!!!! Most of those cable channels, like TLC, DISC, HGTV all have super long commercial breaks....and during Emeril Live it seems like he is only on for 3 minutes, then back to commercial!! ARG! ![]()
Oh well, still love the shows.
I love Alton Brown.. not only that he can cook, but he explains everything in a very scientific way.. and he very fuuny too.. it's good to know why or how certain ingredients react to eachother.. ![]()
I MISS Alton! I don't have cable anymore and I just LOVE him! He's so down to earth! What I want to know, is WHAT vanilla did Alton recommend short of making my own??? Did he say what kind was best??
I adore that show. And yes he's cute....in a nerdy chef sort of way ![]()
