I have almost accidentally gotten a home based business going, and I am clueless as to how to price. I have called around to local bakeries, etc and come up with $1.50 for my serving of basic buttercream ($2.50 for wedding) .and I do fill my cakes. I have figured out that my sculpted 3-D cakes start at $75 and go up from there. I am just CLUELESS about fondant. If my basic buttercream is $1.50 per serving, how much should a fondant covered cake be? And How about a fondant sculpture...like the baby that I did on my most recent cake in my gallery? I charged her $65 for that cake, and my DH is tell ing me that I should have charged more...just because of the baby. How do I price a fondant sculpture? I have a lady wanting me to do cupcakes with sculpted fairies on them and a cake with sculpted fairies...HOW DO I QUOTE THIS CAKE????!!!! ANY help would be awesome!!!
Thank you!~

I really don't know the answer. I just do a few cakes here and there and don't charge enough. But here's a bump for you. Maybe someone will see and help. Did you search the forums for "pricing" I know someone posted a price list not long ago that was very good. I think it also depends on your area and what the going prices are. Have you checked with your local bakeries?

I don't do cakes - just cookies, but from what I've learned you should definitely get more for fondant work. Anyhow, I just wanted to reply to say that your cakes are adorable. It looks like you have come up with some nice original designs. Your baby cake is so sweet.

We will need to know where you live, so someone from your vicinity can help you decide what your market will bear.

I can tell you that where I live, in Allentown, PA, the independent bakeries charge about $2-2.50 per serving for basic buttercream or Bettercream, $3-3.50 for French Buttercream (when they offer it, usually Autumn, Winter, early Spring), and $4.00 minimum for very plain, almost undecorated fondant-covered cakes. These prices reflect a basic vanilla/yellow, chocolate, or marble cake with icing used as filling. Fruit filling is extra, as are special decorations - basketweave, royal icing flowers, gumpaste flowers. And the RI and GP flowers are purchased, not hand-made.
