You need to make the extrenities first and then the top of the body and let them dry, remember to use a tooth pic in each part that way you can place the next piece in place, I hope this helps.
I always use gumpaste for figurines.

I've never tried it, but I'd say you need to insert something in the legs/feet (toothpicks? spaghetti?) while they're soft, to insert down into the cake to hold it in place...?

sorry, I'm not much help...

Have you tried using a skewer?...run it threw the fondant person and then threw the cake, its kinda like using a large tooth pick so to say..HTH, Mary icon_smile.gif

How big is the figure? If a toothpick is too small, a BBQ skewer? A thick-gauged wire that is covered? Check the thread by Aine2 about making faces, I thought she had some information in there about that....

They will be about three to 3 1/2 inches tall. So I attach the arms head legs all by what water or toothpicks is what y'all are saying? Then stick the skewer after I am done with the body while it is soft... or form the body around the skewer... sorry for the questions..... I am not understanding to well.... Also is it smart to do fondant or should I do 50/50 or all gumpaste?

Don't do the figure around the skewer, just make sure you have a fat base to stick the toothpick into. You can use fondant but make sure it's completely dried. Gumpaste on it's own or 50/50 would be better since it would dry harder and more quickly.

You may want to use a gum paste mixture to firm the figures up and dry faster....Don't use water to attach the limbs..use a pinch of the fondant and a few drops of water, stir it till its got a melted look to it and use a fine paint brush to apply it like a glue, careful not to use too much...you can use spaghetti our tooth picks to help hold the limbs in place more securely, stick the tooth pick into the area your wanting to apply the limb and then add your glue and then your limb....it maybe more sturdy to use skewers to stand the figure up with...it would be easier to form the figure and then carefully insert the skewer and allow to dry and then stand it on your cake....make sure the figures are drying well in between adding parts or the softness and weight will cause them to lose form and fall apart.

I always do my figures in pieces, so they are usually dry when I need to assemble them. So, I usually do not use toothpicks to help attach limbs (I will for the head though and I put the toothpick in the the head is still soft). But I also don't use the gum glue either--never have luck with that. Royal icing is a great and sturdy glue and that is what I used to attach all the pieces together in my tea party cake in my photos. If you need the figures to stand up, use bamboo skewers (way stronger than toothpicks) and stick those in the legs and have a good 3-4 inches of the skewers sticking out at the bottom and then you can use that portion to stick in the cake to help it stad up without falling over.

I also agree with Zamode, I would use a 50/50 fondant/gumpaste combo or just gumpaste--just 100% fondant will take awhile to dry.

Good luck!
