I am so in over my head... why did I volunteer to do my sister in laws baby shower cake when I have no previous cake decorating experience...

My first practice cake went well, second practice cake last night went horribly... the BC slipped/melted of the sides and I cant figure out why, so now Im worried my final cake (Due saturday morning) will be a BIG flop!

Ive never stacked a cake before, and I hope we don't ruin everything when trying that!!! AHHHHHHHHHH

I just spent my whole afternoon reading every page in the cake disasters forum... now Im freaking out...

How do you guys do this?

Maybe I should go buy a sheet cake somewhere...

Ok, if the BC was sliding it sounds like you tried to frost a warm cake or the BC was way too thin....

Don't give up icon_smile.gif

What size are you making? Are you really planning a tiered cake? That is hard even if you've done them before. I hear the hidden pillars are the best thing to use - that is what everyone here tells me so I would get some of those if you are planning on stacking.

Also, let your cakes cool and after you fill them, put them in the fridge to firm up before the crumb coat. Are you doing BC on the whole thing?

Well, cripes..... I thought you were a newbie icon_lol.gif You button cake is adorable! I'm sure they were thrilled when you volunteered and the icing edges are so nice and sharp! And fondant too? I think you will do fine icon_smile.gif

You will be fine! Just make everything ahead of time. Bake, let the cakes cool down. Crumb coat and put them in the refrigerator for half an hour. Then finish decorating.
For stacked cakes I will suggest hidden pillars and separator plates, check this web site:

Thanks for the encouragement!

The cakes cooled like 30 hours before I frosted... I dunno *sigh*... Im going to utilize my fridge more this time.. I do after all live in AZ.

I am attemping a stacked cake yes on my first try! LOL... wish me luck!

Bottom will be 9 inch choclate cake with peanut butter filling & pink butter cream, top will be lemon cake w/ lime curd filling & white BC...

Hubby is helping with all the fondant...

I just want this to be perfect for her... and so many of Hubby's family will be seeing it!! AHHHHHHHHHHH

I did my SIL's babyshower cake back in May. I had taken the first 2 courses, but I really wanted it to be perfect. I baked a 12 inch round (previously I hadnt made anything but an 8 inch) Things were going well...then I tried to put the top layer on (with lemon filling) had too much filling and not a good enough dam.. everything oozed out all over! I ended up having to bake the whole thing again!!! At this time it is friday afternoon, evening and my DH is out SAILING!!! Plus I have 3 small boys at home...he was supposed to read through the lines that I wanted him to come home...but Nooooooo. So I was up really late, but it turned out just fine. I just kept it in my head the whole time that it was JUST cake and I could go buy one at the last minute if it totally flopped. Of course I would have been really disappointed....It didnt though, and yours wont either...just take your time, ask questions along the way if you are unsure...it takes a lot less time to ask a question here than bake a whole other cake!
