I've looked through the galleries at various football helmets. I have to make one for a groom's cake. There will be around 50 people at the rehearsal dinner (this is my cousin's wedding, I am doing this as a favor).

Here are my choices:
1. Make one larger football helmet, perhaps with two 8" or 9" layers and a dome on top. My question is that I've seen references to pyrex bowls - I take it you pour the cake batter in and bake it in the bowl to get the dome shape?

2. Make a smaller helmet out of 6" layers and/or the sports ball pan, put it on top of a sheet cake decorated like a football field. I would use a cake board underneath, plus dowels in the sheet cake just in case.

3. Regardless of which way I do it, should I use fondant or buttercream? I think the fondant would look really nice, but I am worried about how to get it to cover this shape (I am a relative novice at this). This will be a Cleveland Browns helmet, which has no logo or words on it - just orange with a brown stripe down the middle.

What do y'all think? I am looking to do this in the least stressful way, since I will also be attending the rehearsal dinner and I'll have family in town.

Thanks so much!

I'm not sure if you came across my helmet cake or not, but check out my pics at the Dallas Cowboy helmet. I covered it in fondant, and it was suprisingly easy! I'd say it was even easier than trying to use buttercream on a rounded shape and make it look smooth. Let me know if that's what you had in mind, and I'll be happy to send you directions.
