How does Bakels fondant taste (the white one)?
I've found a place here that sells fondant, but they only have this brand and I don't want to make a cake covered with something yucky.
Thanks in advance!
Well, I can tell you that Bakels fondant is otherwise known as Pettinice, and I use it a lot for cakes that need to have a firm fondant on them (larger ones especially and wedding cakes!). It tastes OK, kind of vanillary, I actually prefer to eat another fondant I can get, but that tears more easily and is softer. Toba Garrett uses Pettinice, so it must be good!
I also agree...it has a nice vanilla flavor. It's not my favorite- Satin Ice is or Fondx. But, it's pretty good! I'm sure you can add flavor to it with extracts, but honestly, it can stand on its own! And it's very nice to work with, smooth but still firm.
Bakels makes Pettinice which has a mild vanilla flavor. Compared to Satin Ice, it is firmer and dryer for me, but still very workable and easy to use. I love chocolate Pettinice as it tastes like Tootsie rolls.
Their big bucket is 15lbs compared to the 20lb bucket of Satin Ice, if you're comparing prices.
In NZ we don't have a lot of choice, only about 3 brands on the market anyway. Thankfully one of them is Bakels Pettinice, which is all I ever use. I tastes great, and is nice to work with. I let a customer buy the supplies for my american flag and she bought a cheaper brand, well I sulked and complained the whole time I was making it. This other brand was sticky and kept tearing. Thankfully I didn't need much or I would have been surprised if anyone ate it. So yes, I highly recommend it!
I think Bakels Pettinice is a great fondant. It tastes good, and it is great to work with. Very satiny and doesn't tear easily. It's one of two brands that I use (the other is Massa Grischuna by Albert Uster Imports). ![]()
