Has anyone just decorated a dummy cake just to add more design ideas to their portfolio?

I have been itching to do a non-sheet cake (that's all I've been doing lately)! My husband suggested that I just decorate my styrofoam dummies like a cake, take pics, and post them to my gallery! That sounds like a good idea! Have any of ya'll done this!

That's what I thought! Maybe I can ditch the kids for a few hours one of these days and drum up a cake! Fondant of course!!!! Maybe I can also try that new stringwork I've been wanting to try!

Oh fun!!!!

If you look at my cakes the handbag, the 'swirls and pearls' and the cinderella cushions are ALL dummies. I did them because I am fed up with people wanting such boring cakes and hoped if I had some fun ones in my portfolio people would pick them. People are generally fairly limited in their ideas and go for something similar or the same as something they've seen - so my motto is 'fake the cake you'd like to make.' I'll let you know how I get on as I only made those dummies last week!

I've seen tons of people that do that..........I have even actually seen some people that will make an entire stacked wedding cake and decorate one side one way and the other side completely different........just so they could get more cake photos in their portfolio and to show off different techniques without having to make an entire four tier cake for ONE photo!!!

I often do dummies for work (teaching) and just for my site so that people can get ideas of the different things I've done. I've also made real ones and decorated two sides differently. People do order really boring cakes, don't they? I have all these really cool shapes for weddings, like the comma, and the one with the two smaller circles on the sides of the bigger ones, squares, ovals, etc. What do they order? stacked circles! Always!! Anyway, if I make a real cake, I just use it to pass out in pieces afterwards to the neighbors to remind them that I'm here, or I take advantage of their good graces to try new recipes. icon_biggrin.gifthumbs_up.gif

I would. I was lucky enough to get to do a dummy for a cake show a few years ago (the purse and shopping bag in my pics), and the autumn cake in my pics was done for the fair here, then left as a display at a local bridal shop.

They are really fun to do.

Yes, please let me know how the newly decorated dummies icon_biggrin.gif work out for you! I'll look at them in a few!

I just have square, sheet, circles, hearts, and characters but I don't like doing those and don't do them often. I desperately want oval and petal pans!!!!!!

I have four cakes to do for Sept and so far one for later in October. Maybe during that break I will just have to practice. I'd really like to try a fondant drape and some of those ribbon roses I've been seeing!

OOOOHHHHH, so many ideas!!!!!!!! My hubby is about ready to go out for a month so that will help make the time pass!

Thanks ya'll for the encouragement!
