Well, after much fussing and practicing i can FINALLY make a decent rose!!! I can get the center, the row with 3 petals and the row with 5 petals done quite nicely, if I do say so myself....but I can't for the life of me get that last row in there!

When I try to do the 7 petal row the petals push up against the previous row and both rows (and sometimes the inside too) turn into a shapeless lump. YUCK! What might I be doing wrong?

You can kinda see what I'm talking about in the Stringwork cake in my pics (although I of course chose the best looking side to photograph!).

Any suggestions on how I can improve that last row?

Thanks!

Marla

If I can ever perfect my roses I'll be the happiest in the world. LOL On wilton's website www.wilton.com under decorating techniques, there's actually a short video on roses. Maybe that can help. I've watched it and dont think there's hope for me other than trying to make 400 roses a day for practice. LOL

Thanks for the link to the video. They're doing it a little differently than I am. Will try and see if that final row is any better!

maybe your flower nail is too small!! I was using a smaller flower nail and could never figure the roses out and so I took Wilton course 1 and they had us using a bigger flower nail and it made a huge difference with that last row! I didn't even realize that they made different sizes.

edited to add: oh and make sure you're turning your tip out .....the top part of the tip should be almost at a 45 degree angle away from your rose........that makes a huge difference, makes a much nicer and fuller rose.

If your roses come out better without the last row of petals, you don't have to add them. I like the look of roses that aren't overflowing with petals. Sometimes I make the row of five and look at the rose and decide that it looks finished. If your fifth row fans out enough, you can always stop there!

Sorry that doesn't help you with your problem, but that's just my opinion.

those are grat suggestions. You can also try making a bigger center (were the petals will rest) for the rose, just for practice, try with a taller, thicker center and see if it makes any difference
