My oldest will be 6 in about 3 1/2 weeks (August 7). We are having his birthday party on the 4th. He has decided to go with an "alien" theme. Because it's MY son, I want his cake to be absolutely WONDERFUL. I've already picked up the plates, napkins, and goodie bags. We've also already got a pinata ordered. He wants to have tacos to eat at the party. ( I haven't made that connection yet icon_rolleyes.gif ). Anyways, there's probably going to be about 35 people at the party and I want a great cake. I also would love to try out some different fillings and flavors for his cake. I live in a small town and most people just stick to the norm. I would love for this to be a chance to expreiment and try some new stuff. I would greatly appreciate some input from some of you pros out there. Any ideas on decorations for the party, how to decorate the cake, or flavors and fillings will be great. TIA!

I could match to plates, but they are sooo plain. They are blue with a green alien head in the center, and that's it. I wanted his cake to be really good and more elaborate than most of my others, I mean this is MY kid this time. So his has to be better than the others!! icon_lol.gif I don't know about the pianata, my mother ordered it from a store at the beach and it won't be here until next week, so I haven't seen it yet.

BTW, thanks for the taco ideas, he will LOVE those!! thumbs_up.gif

OMG! I LOVE Doug's ideas here! They are soo great!

If you are going to stick with the traditional green theme you could do a mint buttercream filling! I just love this with chocolate cake! If is very refreshing to have something different like that! And kid's should LOVE this flavor! i know my teenage brother did!

For the cake how about making an alien head and make some fondant eyeballs and have them sticking out of the head with some wire! Depending on how many kids you are going to have you could make the head out of the ball pan and shape it a little and then prop that up on some styrofoam for a base and then put a large dowel through it to get it propped up. Then you could cover it in bc or whatever color marshmallow fondant for the alien!

that's all I've got! Good luck to you! Your son sounds like he's got a great idea going here! This is a cute theme!

How about making a spaceship sticking half into a cake, kind of like it crashed, and having some aliens standing around it. You could even color the cake so when you cut into it, everyone gets surprise. It's just something fun.

Have you thought of doing a sculpted cake? Either an alien or their spaceship?

I'd do a big spaceship with a window 'bubble' on top and a little alien in it.

just a tip:
WHATEVER you do (there's already some GREAT suggestions!) BE SURE you are calculating your costs.....
chances are that SOMEONE will want the cake replicated. i have learned from experience that if i try to make that decision 'on the spot' i tend to undercharge.....

I like the idea of the flying saucer - there are some great ones in the gallery!

Sounds like a fun party!

On the spur of the moment, and in the chaos of the party, I, too underestimate icon_cry.gif

Just a few ideas...

*Look in my photos for the alien spaceship that I did for my son's 5th birthday party. You could decorate however you want... I used red/orange Fruit Roll-Ups along the bottom of my cake.

*Green Kool-Aid Kool Bursts--Alien Juice
*Round tortilla chips--Flying Saucers
*Popcorn--Asteroids

These were things I did for the Space Party that my son wanted.
