I have an order for a three tier stacked square cake. The customer does not want a border if possible. Cakes will be white buttercream with black buttercream dots/stripes/? I don't think I can do this without a border? First of all, whenever I stack cakes, I can't seem to get the cake boards underneath hidden. I always have to hide with a border. Anyone have any input on this? Want to please the customer, but don't want to have it look unfinished!

I guess you could hide the flaws with dots and stripes!

Could you put a black stripe on the bottom sort of like a ribbon or is that considered a border?

Thank you for your comments, if all else fails, I'll put a border on it and call it good!

You can also cut your square cake boards a tad smaller than usual so when you cover the cake with fondant, it gets covered too. Then just tuck the outside edges on the bottom with a blunt, thin tool so it looks neat.

I agree with miriel. Also, on an episode of Ace of Cakes, Duff "caulked" the joins with some royal icing to make it look smooth. I thought that was a neat idea.
