Good morning!

Am I losing my mind - or is my little Wilton leveler stretching out over time? Can this happen??? The little hooks don't stay in the grooves very well any more. Is it time for a replacement?

Yes, it does stretch over time. If your going to purchase another, I'd buy the LARGE CAKE LEVELER. It's $20.00, but well worth the $. It works GREAT. I lever cakes with this before I even take them out of the pan. And when you do LARGE cakes it's a dream!

I have my original wilton small leveler and haven't noticed that is stretches (its 10+years old)

I can't stand the large leveler, threw mine out, i found the blade to be very flimsy and wouldn't cut straight for the life of me. BUT i never tried using it with the cake still in the pan.

I always level my cakes still in the pan. I use the edge of the pan as a level guide! Perfect every time! I haven't noticed my small leveler stretching at all but I'll keep an eye out for that happening though!

I never noticed my leveler stretching, it still works great after 5 years. My large one, though I love the size of it, is flimsy in the middle, and sometimes when I torte the sheet cakes or a larger wedding cake it goes a little little haywire in the middle. Very frustrating, but I havne't found another that size, so I keep it icon_rolleyes.gif

No, you are not losing your mind. The blade on the small leveler is merely twisted cable, and will stretch, sooner with more use. I tossed mine and purchased a 14" serrated cake knife from Pfeil and Holing. I get much better results with less crumb.
