Hiya,

Wondered if anyone can help me, Im making my first cake to sell in just over a weeks time and the lady wants a spiderman cake like the one Ive already done once before, as Im actually selling this cake I want to make it look as good as possible, can anyone tell me how you make the buttercream really smooth for the eyes, only my last cake was smooth but you could still see some marks in it. Any help would really be appreciated, also how do you smooth the sides of these cakes, on the last one I did I just couldnt get it too look nice and smooth so had to pipe in stars instead.

Thanks
Paula

I use the hot knife method....dip your knife in super hot water then run it over the icing. It "melts" the icing smooth. I like this method for small things like eyes and such.

I dip my finger in cornstarch after the icing has set for a few minutes, then rub gently...or use a Viva paper towel on larger areas.

If you put a little drop of water on your fingertip you can smooth the eye area. Once this has dried you can continue decorating that area.

I do the same as above.. for the cake i use the hot knife method. (but i usually find so many flaws i do over kill and make it worse than when i started with lol) For smaller spaces I usually dip my finder in cornstarch and smooth it out. Good luck!!
