Fairy Fondant Wings...anyone Know How To Make Them?
Decorating By absolutecakes Updated 31 Aug 2006 , 6:42pm by KHalstead
I am making a fairy cake with the wonder mold pan, and was wondering if anyone had any good ideas or templates for making fairy wings?
Thanks!
Katie
I would use either a butterfly cookie cutter or just the butterfly wing cutters. You could cut fondant, gumpaste, etc. or even poor melted hard candy into them like molds. If you want some texture you coukd use a mold like this one:

Hi,
Another way of making them is out of rice paper or gelatin.
You can cut and paint on rice paper with colouring pens.
You can paint on a wing pattern with melted gelatin on plastic folder and peel when set. Warm the backside of the plastic with warm hands to peel them off without breaking.
I haven't tried cutting them out of getalin leaves. But have been playing with the idea that if I moisten them with water spray I will be able to cut them with scissors. Try and let us know.
If you're wanting a solid fairy wing.......I would just go with a simple butterfly cookie cutter if you're using fondant and lay it on something with an edge so they dry nicely opened..........but if you're wanting a clear wing......the easiest way I think is to get some wire at the craft store.....a sturdy one but not too thick so that it's hard to bend and bend it into the shape you like and then mix equal parts of gelatin and water and microwave just until the gelatin is disolved, let it sit a minute or two to thicken slightly and then dip the wire wing frame into the gelatin.....(you can color it with food coloring too) and much like you'd dip a bubble wand the gelatin will coat the wire and leave a thin film of gelatin in the center of the wire wing shape. Thenstick the end of the wire into some styrofoam and allow it to dry for 20 min. or so and then use that as the wing......or if you want a more delicate wing you can carefully remove the wire frame and just use the thin sheet of gelatin!! It makes beautiful bee wings.......I have some flowers in my pics of gelatin flowers I made with this technique so you can get an idea of what a wing might look like.......when it's colored it almost looks like stained glass of some sort!!! Really pretty I think1
