Made The First Mistake In The Book

Okay I have been so excited about doing a bustier/corset
type cake for my sister's friend's lingerie party.
I had it all planned out.
And since I work full time, producing a fully decorated cake
mid-week means that I have to split it into phases starting
days before because I can only work on it for a few hours at a time.
Since it's for my sister I just asked her to pay for the supplies.
So she and my dad are both in the kitchen while I'm mixing...I'm already stressed out about how much I have to do tonight (my plan was to bake, shape, mold the boobs which are Rice Crispy treats and stick together with the crumb coat tonight) yes it might have been a bit ambitious for just a few hours....anyways so they are mad at me that it's costing so much!!!! My sister went as far to say that she should have just went
to the grocery store to get the cake ![]()
So after all of that, WHILE I'm baking her cake. FOR FREE...
I want to get to bed so I stuck the cakes in the freezer hoping they
would cool off faster so that I can ice them. Never done this before...
don't know WHAT I was thinking because it only made it cool on the
outside. Anyways so I start to put the frosting in between to make it stick
together and start trimming away.
Frosting melted everywhere into a translucent liquidy mess. ![]()
Cake layers are splitting and falling off the sides. ![]()
Very sad.
Mainly because I had such high hopes for this cake.
I was really excited. And even if I can make it look halfway
decent when I cover with fondant tomorrow , the frosting is melted
away and everyone's going to hate how it tastes.
I was always unappreciated for my creative abilities in my family
but now I am unappreciated AND humbled.
Take a deep breath and get in the right frame of find for repairs. Can you re-bake the cake? The cake breaking has me questioning why it is. If you can salvage the cake and it is not overbaked and tastes fine. Just re-apply the buttercream layer and glue the pieces together with the BC. No one will ever know. --I've had to piece together cakes before and they are a pain in the butt, but no one ever notices. Sometimes I have to re-bake because they are beyond repair.-- I'm hoping you can save yours, but sometimes re-baking is the easier way to go and less time consuming in the end. You can do it, just stay positive!!!!
I too tend to overthink my cakes and then they do not turn out as you expect them too. Take a deep breath and if you can piece them together with icing that will just be a bonus for whoever gets that piece!
Once you have it completed no one will know what you went through. You can always add the bustier decorations to cover any spots that show. Good luck! Can't wait to see how it turns out!
I'm sorry - I know there is NOTHING more frustrating than working so hard on something and have it not turn out right. Especially when you're tired, rushed, stressed . . . . . . this happens to me all the time; I am a very impatient person and tend to rush through things and it comes back to bite me! Good luck, I hope you can just get some rest and not spend any more time thinking about it!
She should have gone to a grocery store for a bustier cake?!?!? They would have laughed her out of the store! Hmph! (At least around here, they would have!) She obviously doesn't understand all that goes into a cake. That is the first problem, they don't appreciate the depth of your ability.
I learned the hard way from a couple of all-nighters, that however much time I estimate that a cake will take, double it! I am impatient, too. I now do baking only along with mixing icings on my first day.
I pray that your cake turns out! Can you cut the cakes to remove the melted icing and re-layer with fresh buttercream?
Here's praying and asking the baking fairy to visit you!
Just to support you (although I cannot offer any help or suggestions). It's hard to deal with a "flop" especially if your intention were so honourable. They just don't get it and shame on them. Good luck and I will also pray for the cake fairy to visit! ![]()
i really hate it when someone doesn't realize how much a cake really costs and what all goes into it....my soon to be mother-in-law asked me to make a cake for her to take to work to show off to her friends..i said sure no prob, figure out what you want it to look like and what flavors and i will make it. So she told me what she had in mind...i added up the costs of the supplies and it totaled to be about $40...she changed her mind after that....told her to pick not such expensive fillings and maybe just BC frosting....still changed her mind....oh well....
if you have time i would suggest just rebaking the cake...although it takes time, sometimes it goes smoother and isn't as frustrating to fix a broken cake....
Thank you so much for the support girls : )
I feel so much better than I did last night.
I think I can salvage it. I'll post pics when I'm finished.
Love the "cake fairy" !
Salvage successful! ![]()
Just finished my bustier cake just now.
It looks much much much better than I thought it would!
No one will ever know
I don't know what they will think when they cut
into it...hopefully they won't notice the strange,
un-uniform way that the frosting is.
Thank you for everyone's tips and support : )
I will post my cake in the gallery now.
It turned out great
Annoying how people don't appreciate the care that we take in doing our cakes ![]()
That's like this stupid lady that comes around the farmers market all the time. She's always complaining about price. A few weeks ago, she came into our booth and was looking at my peanut butter cookies by the dozen. She looked at the price and this was her comment, "$4.50?!? I can MAKE them for cheaper than that! humph" What a
Of COURSE you can make them for cheaper. That's the point. I am doing the service of putting time in to make them. Later in the day, I heard her walking past with who I assume to be her husband (miracle of miracles that she has one) and she was commenting on how high of price the organic produce was that she bought. The thing that amazes me is that she continues to come back and $%^& about the prices. Why keep coming??
