What exactly is shimmer dust and how do you use it? Can you use it on both MMF and a buttercream frosted cake? Is there an advantage to using shimmer dust over other coloring methods? Does anyone have any pictures in their profiles of cakes where you used shimmer dust so I can get a better idea of what it does?
I bought some the other day, but didn't use it yet. I was told to mix a small amount in some good clear pure vanilla extract and then brush it on your fondant or whatever you are using it for. The vanilla has alcohol so it will evaporate.
Like I said, that is what I was told! haha. Experience might have a different opinion!
Hope that helps, let me know cause I want to try it too!
Wilton's shimmer dust is just finely ground cake sparkles. You can sprinkle them on a BC iced cake or spritz a bit of water on a fondant cake and sprinkle them on. They do not work like luster dusts at all--the sprakle dusts clump when mixed with alcohol or extracts.
shimmer dust is different than luster dust.........first you have to figure out what you have.........shimmer dust in sold by wilton in craft and cake dec. stores.......it's a bigger granual than lust dust which is like actual dust! The shimmer dust will add a sparkly ness I guess........but not the way luster dust works........luster dusts work well mixed with alcohol or extracts and then brushed on.......I did this with the painting technique on my guitar cake and the gold accents on my treasure chest cake were fondant with gold luster dust painted on........if you have shimmer dust though they won't work the same way.
Hey puzzlegut,
I just looked in Wilton.com and if you do a search for shimmer dust you'll find a tutorial that explain how to use it, and it looks pretty simple... let's see how it works. When I bought it I though it was luster dust
and it's not!!
And is already opened!
I'll have to live with that!! ![]()
KHalstead is right. Shimmer dust is nice from Wilton and FDA approved, but it has it's limits. Luster dust will give your cakes a reall sparkle, but subtly. I mix mine with vodka or everclear, depending on whether I'm painting or airbrushing with it. I also use it with a large blush brush when i'm doing pearl dust on wedding cakes and chocolates. Petal dust is a more flat dust that can be used on your gum paste flowers to make them more real looking. There is also disco dust if you want to have some fun! Just make sure you get the ones marked "edible", especially when ordering gold and silver. I have links on my website under classes to several places around the country that sell it if you are interested. www.mycakeshop.com/classes
It stinks! I used it last night on two cakes for some sparkle and my husband said, "Did you know there was yellow stuff on one of those cakes?" I said it was like glitter. He thought I undermixed the icing!
I just put mine in an unused salt shaker and dusted the top. It's worthless, if you ask me but I paid for it and like Nyma, when I was just starting to buy cake goodies, thought it was like luster. ![]()
I just tried some too. Looks pretty under the light, but otherwise it just sort of looks like dust.
