When covering a cake with fondant I use a butter cake recipe because it holds up really well with the weight of the fondant. I normally baked all of my cakes from scratch until recently I tried the box cake mix extenders/enhancers. However, I would also like to use a box cake mix enhancer/extender when making fondant covered cakes, but I don't know if it would hold up to the weight of the fondant. Is there a recipe for a box cake mix that would give me a dense cake that is strong enough to hold the fondant.

TIA,
Cynita

I don't know about any enhancer recipes but I've been successfully using Walmart's Great Value cake mixes for all my cakes with fondant (and others) and have gotten nothing but great reviews and no problems. I've found their chocolate cake comes out denser than some other brands (but not too dense in the least).

Shalderman, there's no problems with the cake being too soft causing it to lean or fall when the fondant is applied? That's my biggest worry.
I know that a duncan hines or pillsbury seem a little too light to hold up the fondant.

1 Duncan Hines Yellow (or White) cake mix
4 egg whites
1/2 cup water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 small pkg of instant vanilla pudding mix
1 cup sour cream

Mix each ingredient thoroughly. Bake a 350 for the time called per pan.

I use this recipe for ALL of my cakes. It is VERY sturdy and OH-SO-DELISH!!!!!

Take my word for it!!! My BIL said just yesterday that all I needed to make him for his B-day was just the cake-no icing-just the cake. Trust me, it's that good!! icon_smile.gif

Thank you! It was a cake I did for my cousin's bridal shower last month. Only my 2nd tiered cake and I was so nervous!

I have never had a problem with the WASC. I notice that a lot of people on here use it also. It is a dense but moist cake and it is delicious. You can find the recipe on here, just do a search. HTH

I use WASC and have not had problems with fondant cakes. Sometimes, I use 1 box pudding + 1 extra egg with the cake mix and that holds up good on fondant too.
