Has anyone tried Wilton's Pearl Dust (different than Wilton's Shimmer Dust)?

Is there already a forum about this?

I would like to use the gold for an upcoming wedding cake. Would you recommend/not recommend this product?

Thanks.

I have played around with this a little in class. It works just like the pearl/luster dusts that other companies make.

Yes I used the silver pearl dust for both the sign on the cars cake in my photos and the ladders and button accents on the fire truck cake I did (also in my pics). I used it dry on the chocolate melt ladders & cars sign and mixed with a touch of vanilla on the buttons/wheels.

I have used it dry with good results, however I have not tried to mix it with vodka or lemon extract so I do not know how it reacts with it.

I used the Wilton's yellow pearl dust this past weekend. I mixed it with Everclear grain alcohol.

It worked OK, but I honestly felt it didn't mix as well as other dusts that I have. It seemed to stay grainier and there were a few odd larger dots of an orange color that just wouldn't get smaller and mix at all.

I think I'd have been pretty unhappy had I needed to cover a large surface neatly and evenly.

I bought all of the colors except the silver, so I'll keep them and use them for accents or dry dusting only.

I have a dilemma. I need to use a pearl/luster dust on buttercream icing, BUT I have a restriction that I cannot add any kind of alcohol to it (which would include vodka, extracts, etc.).

Can anyone recommend how to do this?

Can I brush pearl/luster dust on buttercream dry???

Thanks

You sure can if it is a crusting buttercream! Most use a new, big, soft blush brush(me included) to put it on dry=) Jen

Why the restriction? The alchohol all evaporates away doesn't it? That's the whole reason it is used. Are you sure you can't even use a lemon extract or clear vanilla? You won't get the same brilliance in color and shimmer from a dry dusting that you get from mixing it with alcohol and painting.

I have used the Wilton pink and I also found some rather large lumps of something in it. I mixed it with Everclear and it worked okay but I like the quality of other brands better.

The Everclear does evaporate. If you put some on a saucer and leave it out for a little while, it will completely be gone.

I used the silver on some tool cookies I made for Father's Day and did not have any problems at all. I have used some of the other colors on gumpaste flowers with no problems either. I used it with vanilla. And it does completely evaporate.
