Hi Everyone,
I start course 3 next Tuesday. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as far as tools are concerned for using the fondant. I know they give you something to use in the student kit, which I have not bought yet by the way.

Anyway, I'm just looking for ideas and a good reason to shop. LOL. Like is a non-stick mat essential to working with fondant? Our class tables are pretty yucky.

Anyone know of a good online store that will ship to APO addresses fast??

Thanks!!

They made us buy the kit and it comes with a fondant smoother and pillars, etc.... She also recommended the Wilton mat with the grid marks ( which is very handy for getting your decorations to line up ).

Not sure about APO addresses.... ebay? I am a seller and most will ship to APO and if they are buy it now and you tell them your situation they should expedite....

I don't like the fondant mat that came with the student kit, I bought the gridded one and just tape it to the table. It works great, but don't know how long it will last-kinda flimsy.

I didn't get a fondant smoother in my kit. I didn't buy one, but could certainly of used it, but I'm a tactile kinda gal and my hands worked fine.

I'm doing week 3 tonight and next week is the big finale. I ordered some Pettinice fondant that I'm picking up today for my final cake. I've been making fondant roses for a week now. I'm so excited! They really are fun to make, but labor intensive.

I think the small plastic rolling pin and the ribbon cutter are good to have for working with fondant. Also, a good pizza cutter works really well to cut fondant!

Here is the list of the things you will get in your kit:
- more tips 18,68,352,86,127
- small lilly nail
-cake sparkles
- ball and vaining tool,
- Brush
- Thin and thick foam squares
- Yellow stamens
- 1 little bag of gum tex
- Rose bouquet flower cutters (5)
- 8 in separator plate
- 4 pillars
- cake dividing wheel mat

I use that mat a lot, just inmerse it in really hot water to get all the wrinkles out of it and then roll it (never fold it again). I bought at walmart a big piece of vinyl and that is what I use to roll my fondant for big cakes.
I will suggest to buy the fondant smoother, the fondant embosser ( i use it a lot for the ribbon), the perfect high rolling pin (small). Get a small pizza cutter to cut your fondant .

Enjoy your class!

Thank you both so much for sharing your tips! I went and bought the student kit and it did not come with a fondant smoother and they were all sold out. I will have to order online or email my mom and have her send me one.

Thanks!

I think you might be mistaken. I teach Wilton classes and if you are talking about the Wilton Course 3 kit they do not come with the fondant smoother. It comes with 4 push in pillars and an 8" seperator plate and other nice goodies but not the smoother. If you got a fondant smoother you lucked out. icon_biggrin.gif The smoother is not a necessity but it makes smoothing easier. I recommend my students purchase it in course 1, it helps when smoothing your buttercream icing with the parchment (or wax paper) after it has set.

Honestly, I bought one for the course and haven't use it at all.
