There are alot of cakes around with wire and fondant beads attached. I want to do one with swarovski crystals, but I need to know what kind of wire you use, what gauge etc. Should I by sterling sivler wire ?????????????

It really just depends on how heavy the crystals are. Are you going to actually stick the wire in the cake or is it going to be attached to something else? You can either use the silver wire that is used to make jewelry or you can use florists' wire.

I would NOT buy sterling silver wire at all. Silver is at an all-time high in price, and since you are covering the entire wire with crystals, it would be pointless since nobody would see it. I would get a good quality silver or platinum colored craft wire in 20 or 22 gauge. Swarovski crystals will fit on both gauges with no problem. (You can even go with 24 gauge, but that's a smaller diameter and you might not be able to retain the shape once the crystals are on it and weigh it down.) Also, you may want to look into Chinese crystals ~ there are some that are made that are very close in quality to Swarovsky, but much less expensive in price. HTH!

You can use floral wire from the craft store as well. To stick into the cake, use plastic coffee stirrers or straws so the wire does not come in contact with the cake.
