Well, it was a disater in my eyes, i am not sure how the couple felt but here is the story-
Some one asked me to make them a cake for their surprise aniversary party, they didnt care what kind or the flavor as they had tasted many of my cakes in the past.
I decided to make a Red Velvet cake, I had never made one before as it has an unusal taste. since i never made one i dicdie to go with the box mix, as we all know box mix tends to be on the hevy side when it comes to layered cakes, som how i forgot this in my excitment.
I decided to do a cake with 10 layers- that means 10 pieces of cake and 8 layers od cream. Usually when i do such a high layer cake i make the actual cake very light in weight. Red Velvet is not a light cake ( i did nt know that though) so i bakes and cut all of the layers, i then made the creak from scratch, cream cheese and toffee infused buttercream for the inside layers(also not a light filling) i proceded to begi building the cake, all on a turning pedistal set atop an granite counter i have specifically for frosting.
Normally once i start building a cake i do not move it until i am finished. (fine in most cases) once i completed building all of the cake layers filling and frosting, i laid down a thin sheet of icing over the entire cake to seal in the flavor and moisture, i then let this sit overnight to settle and for the outer layer to firm.
i decided to do the final coat of icing 2 hours before i was to deliver the cake (usually fine in most cases) sinc eit is sumer and butter cream has a tendacy to melt in a warm atmosphere. After putting the final coat of icing and doing the final decorating, i went to move the cake.........
I WAS UNABLE TO PICK IT UP!!! it was way too heavy, the 2 inch foam board it was sitting on broke on my second attempt to pick it up as well!!!
at this point i am freaked out, i have to get to the place in time and i cant leave the cake, i am looking all over the kitchen for a glass base plate since that would be the only thing that wont break under the weight of the cake, since i made the bottom piece slightly large, none i had would fit. so i decided t use a square wood block coved in foil with a doilie after i manged to transfer the cake to the block i had to re-ice half of it. but guees what flks, the fun doesnt stop there. i still had to transport this bohemoth, normally i can transport a can just fine in the back seat of the suv without tipping, but this heavy thing decided it wanted to move everytime the care moved, it was starting to look like a topsy turvy cake lol
well i got it there finally, and again had to re- ice it.
i got so many oos and awws at the height and decore, and when they sliced into it, people were amazed to see the zebrea of red velvet cake and cream colored filling, and the taste was great. but learn from me, know the weight before you get started or you are setting yourself up for disater
What a nightmare !
That sounds like it was fun!! ![]()
I'm glad it all worked out for you in the end and everyone was satisfied. I bet it was yummy!! What kind of dowels did you use to support it?
congrats on making it and the oohs and aahs! I once made a cake that was so heavy I had to knock on my neighbor's door, offer a free lunch, and ask for help!!!
wow 10 layers...geesh...i can only imagine trying to move the cake...i have trouble moving a full sheet cake...lol...well at least the cake made it there in one piece and you got ooos and awwws... ![]()
