Are you going to take any Wilton courses? If so there are some supplies that you will get in the course kit. But I would say if you are just starting out you might want some feather weight bags. Star tips are good for piping stars #14, 16 or 18. Round tips are good for writing messages. Spatula to ice your cake. Cake pans if you don't already have them. Good luck to you! Keep reading cc you will learn a lot about cake decorating, I have!!

Books!! Even if your not taking the Wilton courses, some places like Hobby Lobby sell the couse books seperate. Also, try out all the types of bags that are out there (feather weight, disposable, & parchment). I use the disposable mostly and parchment for small amounts of colors. Definitely get couplers to put in your bags so you can easy change out tips. Get a tip set! That way you would get a variety without having to pick out each one. Wilton has a couple different sizes of sets. A turntable helps too, to put your cake on to ice. Also, I use a bowl scraper to smooth the sides and tops of my cakes. Very helpful! Well, that's all I can think of right now but I'll post again if I think of more.
HTH,
Heather

HI there and welcome not only to CC, but the fun world of cake decorating!! If you can afford it, I would HIGHLY recommend getting the "tool box". I have NO idea what I would do with out it. If you ARE taking the classes, the Class I kit will have the basics to get started. Even if you're not taking the classes I would recommend getting the kit. I LOVE my big bent spatula.. dang i cant think of the technical term for it. LOL. ummm what else.. I love my spinning turntable. it's the small one that you can put in a cake carrier. Also the basic 9x13 and 8"round pans too. I have a whole wish list of stuff that Im getting slowly but surely. But dang, Im runnin outta room LOL

Dont forget to check for a Micheals coupon. You can get one thing for 40% off. If you are not taking any classes I would recommend a book. That has some instruction in it on using the tips. When I started I bought one item with a coupon and a few tips each time. One thing I think is very important to have is a turntable. Good luck!

I took just jumped right in and bought the "tool box" during my course I class. I understand not wanting to buy everything at once, however, if you buy the tool box, it's actually cheaper. It is costly up front (I believe it's like $120-$150) BUT again, much cheaper in the long run than buying individually. Also, like others have mentioned, if you have the 40% off coupon for Michael's, that's a great deal. Good Luck and Welcome!! icon_smile.gif

If you can afford it, the "tool box" or "tackle box" already mentioned above - is perfect. That's what I started with & it comes with a variety of tips, a small spatula, a practice board with examples so you can try-out the tips. I can't remember if it comes with food coloring gels. I don't think it comes with toothpicks (but you probably have some at home already)... I didn't start with the revolving cake stand, but did get it as soon as I could. If you cannot afford that "tool box", then get the #1 round tip for fine details & you can write with it, but I would also suggest a larger round tip as well. Then, a star tip & a leaf tip. Remember that you can use smaller tips to obtain a larger leaf (keep squeezing!), but you cannot get a small leaf from a large tip. I guess you may also want the petal leaf if you want to do roses. So those are the basic tips, then the spatula, and I use disposable bags to this day. You can get a box of 100 or 125 for about $20 (around my parts at least!). That's all I started with before my husband purchased me the tool box, which I highly recommend you just "go for it" & get. Good luck! =)
