Aaarrrg, I'll Never Figure Out Fondant!! - Long

OK, so I entered this local cake decorating contest on 7/7/07. There were two catagories, 3D (which I have never done) and sheet. So I entered both like a dummy and on top of those two cakes, had two orders and a small wedding cake to do!! I had to work at my part-time job til 2pm on Friday. By the time all my baking was done and I had decorated my orders, it was 1am when I started on the sheet cake (which I forgot to take a photo of). Then came the 3-D which I had the grand idea to do a replica of our courthouse. I had made rice crispie treats to use on the roof and dome. Visions of Duff and his gang came to mind, they make it look so easy! WHAT WAS I THINKING!!! I rolled out my fondant to cover it, layed it over the cake and tried to smooth it. How do you get nice crisp corners??. It looked like a 4 year old had done it. Gave up, pulled the fondant off, bagged it, went to bed around 2am. Prayed to God for an inspiration. Dogs got me up at 5:30am. I took one look at the monstrosity sitting on my table and knew there was no way I was gonna get that thing done by the 10am deadline. So, out with the knife and I whacked off the top of the building and top layer of cake. Carved three books and covered with BC. I was comfortable with the result. Anyway, went to the contest, very small, only 4 of us entered and I think only three in the sheet cake division. Anyway, there was a $50 cash prize for each and I won both! I was proud, but I also felt kind of piggy, ya know what I mean? I wanted to win both, but when it happened, I felt like I had hogged it all. I think I was the only one who really decorated lots, the others just did it for family and friends. I guess I should still be proud of the win, the judges taste tested too, so that made me feel good about the taste of my product. Anyway, I am going to re-invest my winnings in cake pans and such. I am going to try to attach a pic of my books.

Congrats!!! Instead of feeling bad about winning both, why don't you put those feelings and energy into helping the organizers of the comp. hold another contest. You could help organzie and advertise! Cake contest sponsered by _____ and BearCreek Cakes! You could volunteer to help in turn free advertising!!!
