Hi, I am new to this site and cake decorating. I would like to make a simple cake with butterflys for my moms b-day. Any suggestions? I haven't had any kind of classes, but can do a few things. Here is a cake I made for my nephew.

Hi JenJenn, and welcome! You're gonna like it here.

Do you have access to wafer paper (also called rice paper)? I frequently use this for making butterflies. You will need:

wafer paper
images of butterflies (printed from your computer is ok)
food color pens
cuticle scissors (or other tiny scissors you use for your cakes only)
piping gel
powdered food colors
paintbrushes that you use for cakes only
edible glitter/sanding sugar (optional)

Tape your images onto a firm, flat surface. Place your wafer paper on top. Using food coloring markers and a VERY LIGHT TOUCH, trace a butterfly shape onto the wafer paper, outlines only. Cut out with the cuticle scissors.

Here's where you can get creative. You can either "paint" the colors of the butterflies with the powdered food colors OR you can gently use the food color pens to color your butterflies. With the pens, I then gently brush a thin layer of piping gel onto the back sides first, then the front sides, of the butterflies. You can then sprinkle them with edible glitter or sanding sugar, but not too much as they are very delicate and can't hold a lot of weight.

If you use the powdered food colors, the colors will be much more pastel, but still just as lovely.

Pipe a body with dark chocolate icing, then embed your wings into the body at the angle you want and voila! You have just made a butterfly.

I have also done them with royal icing and white netting, but this is very time consuming and even more delicate. Good luck!

Your cake is very cute! It looks like you have a pretty good idea of what your doing.

I would suggest that you look in the Galeries for some very helpful ideas!

Good Luck and most of all Have Fun! icon_biggrin.gif

Welcome to the site and beware you will rapidly become addicted!
That is a pretty cake you made for your nephew!

There are a lot of really pretty butterfly cakes in the photo gallery- if you just go into the gallery, hit search and type in butterfly you'll find a lot of inspiration- if there is something you like either the photo caption explains how it was done or you can pm the person who made it and ask for direction. Good luck!

Do you have a butterfly cookie cutter. You can always use the cutter to make the butterfly shape in the frosting, and then pipe around it, filling it in and decorating it however you want. Gook Luck!

another easy way to make butterflies is to get the wafer/rice paper and get a nice rubber stamp of a butterfly and use gel colors, brush them on the stamp and stamp the paper.....then color in with food markers and cut the butterfly out........you can stamp both sides and color both sides for an authentic looking butterfly
