So my husband turned on this save the earth concert........ how in the heck does a concert save the environment? Don't tell me awareness since who hasn't heard of global warming. The whole thing seems really hypocritical. They have Cameron Diaz on there talking about her hybrid, but I know that she takes private jets which many times over pollutes more than a car. Also do you see all the light shows and fancy fancy the bands are putting together for the concert... if they really cared about the environment wouldn't they be playing "unplugged" in the middle of a field rather than burning all of that electricity and resources? Whole thing seems really hypocritical to me. I think I'll go bake cake instead of watching this drivel.
Live Earth will send proceeds to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a nonprofit organization chaired by Gore (tickets for the U.S. concert range from $83 to $34
.
yes in some ways it is raising awarness...but it is quite ironic they are using so much energy to do this show...
on the other hand...the concert is mostly sold out...and the proceeds are going to a good cause...
I think awareness does need raising, there are still some entire countries out there who are still denying climate change exists. There are still some people out there who recycle nothing, dont think about the impact the food purchases they make have and live a selfish life. Sometimes the best way to get through to people is through celebrities who have replaced the traditional 'role model' figure. They are hoping to raise money to help support charities working really hard to counteract the effects of selfish people out there. It just wouldn't have the same impact if if was a few folk singers in a mud hut.
cynical and jaded viewpoint here
I must be getting old - only dipped into and out of the thing as much of it sounded just like 'noiz' to me.
I agree that there are countries/regimes out there that do still need to be persuaded / educated that their country's self interest ought to defer to the greater good of plantetary interests. Not sure global concerts are the most effective way of doing this, or of even making individuals change their own energy consumption habits /embark on recycling / etc.
Tho' probably v effective at raising performers' profiles - presumed they all performed for free.
Although I agree with Emma that "celebrities ..have replaced the traditional 'role model' figure" - I wonder for how long 'celebrity' will be as effective a tool - fewer celebrities these days have true gravitas - thus so many come and go and the danger is that the message they promote disappears with them.
I wonder if we'll see a reversion to truly charismatic politicians influencing us once more. (Regretably, in the UK, the stock of charismatic politicians is at an all time low.)
When I did listen to the bits in between the performances a lot of the UK TV interludes were just crass and so totally cringeworthy. The 'beloved' Ricky Gervais seems to have become an irritating 'twit'(politer than the term I wanted to use) both on stage and backstage.
One Gervais 'humorous' comment in particular stood out -he joked that artists had flown in from all over the world... very funny. Q. for UK CCers, did that fall totally flat or was that just me.
It just seemed to be a case of 'same old, same old' with a lot of self-promotion thrown in.
How else are they supposed to get the message out? Of course most people have heard of Global Warming, but there are many who deny that it exists. From most of the comments I've read about the concert not just on this forum , but others, I'm not surprised that the earth is in the shape its in. We need to be aware, but also make our children aware.

oh but dont you know ge....its so much EASIER to sit around and complain about it and complain about those doing ANYTHING ABOUT it??
talk about hypocritical! ![]()
kinda funny...here we all are talking about how global warming is affecting us...ranting on concert singers...but were are we all sitting right now???
on our computers...prolly w/a tv or radio in the background...lol...
just thought that's kinda funny or ironic...u choose...
OUR OWN COUNTRY, THE US FOR THE AMERICANS, IS THE MOST RESPONSIBLE FOR GLOBAL WARMING, YET WE ARE NOT THE MOST POPULATED. AND WE ARE ALSO THE ONES IN MOST DENIAL.
i WATCHED ALL THE CONCERTS. i RECYCLE EVERYTHING I THINK I POSSIBLY CAN. i AM GOING TO GET THOSE LIGHT BULBS AND SWITCH MINE AND I'VE STARTED TO UNPLUG WHATEVER I DON'T USE OFTEN.
WE DO NEED AWARENESS, INSTEAD OF POLITICIANS RAISING MONEY FOR CAMPAIGNS AND THEIR POCKETS AND TREATING US LIKE OUR COUNTRY, AND OUR WORLD, NO LONGER BELONGS TO US.
LIVE AID IN THE 80S, AND I REMEMBER, DID A LOT FOR THE FAMINE IN AFRICA. WE MANAGED TO REVERSE THE DAMAGE TO THE OZONE LAYER.
THE POINT OF AWARENESS IS THAT LITTLE THINGS ACCUMULATED MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE!
WATCH "AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH" AND BECOME ENLIGHTENED AND AWARE!
I don't own an incandesant bulb anymore! Everything is lit by fluorescent. The amount of energy these bulbs save adds up to big bucks over a years time. I have the covered decorative fluorescent for the ceiling fixtures for asthetic purposes. We had better take heed of our enviroment or your grandchildren/my great-grandchildren will be paying the price of all the glutton enery waste, that all countries and especially americans are guilty of using. We really need to LIVE GREEN!! I'm off my soap-box now.
Okay, have to go with the facts here on global warming from ALL of the scientists of the world. The earths atmosphere is very thin and yes, polution is not helping but the whole global warming thing isn't true. It actually deals with the way the earth rotates and every few 63,000 years there is a bob (like a skip) that the earth does on the ecliptic. This makes the Earth a lot warmer. Guess what we are in right now, yep one of those skips and it will only get warmer for more years. It will cool back down eventually but hey, we might be dead by then ![]()
Do I believe polution isn't helping--certainly but the polution of the Earth is actually cause for alarm with the Ozone layer. Our polution actually conributes less than 1% of the Ozones damage. The #1 thing that destroys the ozone is actually shuttle launches because it goes straight through it
This has been said many times, but people in politics just say it's not true because they know it's a hot spot with voters. Just have to say before anyone flames me that I recycle and try to be as green and Earth friendly as possiblle. I'm not making this up either. They actually teach this in colleges. I just finished up my science courses and this was the main thing it was over.
Oh and the US does kick out a lot of polution, but many other countries produce more than us. Just think of all the companies that started up in other countries like China, India and Mexico. Every country is responsible for polution--but it does not cause global warming. It just makes the air we breath and ground food comes from less healthy---so yes, it is important to try to help our planet as much as possible.
Forgot to say I have those eco-friendly lightbulbs too. Only one problem---they contain mercury!
I just found this out from someone who works in a plant that makes them. So when they get thrown away and put into the dump, what gets absorbed by the ground--mercury. IT sucks, seems like the more we try to do to help the earth the more we hurt it in the process.
I urge everyone to recycle as much as possible though!!!! Recycling seems to really be a big help. I'm a firm beliver in the more trees we have the better--after all they convert the Carbone dioxide that the earths atmosphere is mainly made up off into Oxygen. Much needed for us to survive. Okay, getting off my soap box now
Hope I didn't offend anyone by my comments---I've just been studying this for a long time so it's a little frustrating to me that people aren't informed correctly, but what those in politics and the media want us to hear.
The way my husband puts it is that it was warm when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth so why are we so sure that humans are the cause of any possible climate change?
The Vikings were forced out of Greenland due to falling temperatures and there was a mini ice age, the climate is not a stable thing.
A large part of it is politics and which scientists get the money for research or the voice on the news. There are many that say global warming is a myth or that if the world is warming it probably isn't caused by people, others point out that we haven't been tracking temperatures long enough to be sure that the average temperature is really going up, a hundred years isn't a very long time when you think about the age of the planet. I've heard one that said it's awfully arrogant of us to decide that the current climate is what's best for the world.
I think people being upset by these celebrities telling us to cut back is because they don't set an example, if they aren't doing what they want us to they shouldn't be saying anything. Many of their houses use more electricity in a month than I do all year and they buy far more products than the average American that all contribute to polution in the making of it. Then they say it's okay because they buy carbon offsets which remind me of indulgences sold during the middle ages and were a big reason for the protestant reformation. The rich could buy their way out of sin but the poor better not sin or they'd go to hell, so now they can pollute but we had better all conserve as much as possible.
We should try to do what we can to protect our resources but the jury is still out on global warming.
The same people that believe global warming is not true believe evolution is not true and believe only in creationism ...this is IGNORANCE...get a real education
This is an inflammatory and unnecessary comment. It is also UNTRUE. I believe in evolution and I believe that global warming is true, what I'm not entirely sure of is the cause of global warming. I'm not going to get into an argument about it. Suffice it to say that we certainly do no harm by being as earth-friendly as possible. Our reasons for doing so really don't matter in the long run.
wow! try giving someone a different opinion and they call you ignorant. I respected your opinion because thats the thing decent humans do. If you have a problem there is no need to attack someone else. That's just improper and shows lack of class. If you have that opinion that's fine, but you will not change my mind or feelings. This is a forum made up of many people and ideas, not just yours!
