Fondant?????its Making Me Crazy!

ok so i am very very new to this cake decorating, i recently tried MMF (i bought wilton to compare it to and and like the MMF way better!) anyhow how to i cover the cake with the fondant without having it hang off the sides of the cake looking like fabric?im just not real sure how to smooth it and just have one little seam. HELP! Thanks so much, im new to CC (First Post)
use a fondant smoother or if you dont have one use your hands ,gently rub over cake . on sides of cake smooth back and forth not up and down if square cake try to smoothout corners first. check under articles, it may have directions on applying fondant

welcome to CC...usually u can use a fondant smoother and smooth it...

Adding glycerine to MMF makes it more pliable and I find I rarely have trouble with seams even on odd shapes. Try adding 1 T glycerine after melting the MMs.
Also, if it is rolled too thick or is not soft enough (either too much sugar or dries out from not working quickly enough) you may end up with an elephant skin appearance.
I take the "ripples" I get at the bottom and pull the fondant out from the cake, smooth them, then squish the fondant onto the plate (or whatever the cake is on) to make it stick. I work it all the way around and it will usually stretch out enough that you can take the ripples out. I really hope this makes sense to you, its very late here and I just can't sleep!!! Sometimes I do still have small problems with ripples but they are usually small enough I can cover with borders!
Okay, so what's bumping? (new 2) I thank you all for your explanations, because all the tutorials seem to skip this part! There's a picture of putting the fondant over the cake, then the picture of it smoothed on! I'm intimidated because I'm a bc gal, but want to try it...
lol, i feel ya crazycakes, the tutorial made it look like you just lay it o the cake and BAM! its perfectly smooth all the way around, im going to try again in the morning and i am also going to get soem of the "dummy cakes" so i dont have to keep baking, i've that part down just fine, its the decorating that i need to work on. here is the link to the cakes i did, the pink and orange one was my very first one, and the black and white was the second, i just covered the sides in buttercream b/c i could never get it smoothed out.

JessicaCourtney, Nice cakes! I would suggest putting them in the fridge to harden the bc, then use a warm, dry bench scraper to help smooth it out. I tell ya, a cc member just posted a link to a you tube cake planet tutorial on how to cover a cake. It took the mystery out of it, watching her pull the bottom up and out while smoothing. They're Australian, so assuming "icing" is fondant and "corn flour" is corn starch. Check it out!

It took me a while to get the guts to lift and pull the fondant out, but I seem to have it down now, and haven't done near as many fondant cake as some of my fellow CC's. You will get it with doing a couple cakes, funny thing is I find squares easier, but most tell me they think rounds are easier!
