OK I have a wonderful opportunity to make a cake for a MAJOR cell phone provider in our area. now HOW do I make a real looking one. Any one. I have a little time so think with me. a flip phone is prefered. I can make a sheet cake with the company logo no problem but the phone. I'd like to put a message on the screen. That I can do If I can just figure the phone out. I'd like to make it cake but If I had to go with just a small one made of gumpaste I can. Any Ideas???
Doug? You always seem to have something on the drafting table how about a cell phone laying around??

Do you want the entire cake to be a cell phone or do you want a sheet cake with a cell phone on it?

If you have time you can get an edible image printed out for the screen.... as far as building the cake though I'm not sure if you want a huge cell phone or just a fondant model of one.

Go for the whole cake as cell phone! The "keypad" half could lay flat on the cake board, and you could prop up the "screen" portion to look like it is flipped open with your message on the screen.

When you select the phone model to make, be sure that the provider offers that model - it will not look good for an Iphone with a provider other than AT&T icon_smile.gif

definitely check out the models that the provider offers...maybe they have one of those newer types that doesn't flip, just slides upwards and becomes the ear piece...do you know which one i'm talking about? that would be pretty easy, and you wouldn't have to prop up the flip part. you could just do a smaller block of cake underneath, that would be hidden (like when you make a 3d firetruck with the wheels, and you need to suspend the truck "bed" off of the cake board.)

does anyone know what the heck i['m referring to or am i desperately needing sleep?

Don't know if this helps, but I created this cake with a cell phone on it. To create the cell phone, I found pixtures of the phone I wanted to create and used them as a guide to make the phone.

It's hard to tell, but since it was a picture phone (one of the first for the company) I had an edible image picture on it. The keys turned out to be labor intensive, but overall I was pleased with the final product.

a) tho' it seems like it at times -- I don't live on here.

b) old = need ugly sleep (long past it making me a beauty!) I tend to be off to nightmare land by about 11PM ET sooo your request came in at about the time to "floss the teeth so the hygienist doesn't dig extra hard to make you suffer."

c) stupid, idiot computer!!!! -- went a bit wacko last night -- all is well now.

-----------------------------------

so...

sketch.

base is WOOD -- any wood.

note to left side how a slot has been cut into the base to accept a very thin piece of wood that will sit at a slant. suggest masonite or plywood for thin piece.

angle of cut into base determines slant of board remember. suggest cut that is about 30 to 45 degrees max.

any person w/ a table saw can make short order of that cut (one pass)

-----

before adding cake -- can shape both base and upright boards to get things like rounded corners or whatever is features you want.

I suggest sanding the boards to round off all the outside edges to make it easier to blend into cake

as I also suggest covering the whole thing in fondant and allowing the fondant to cover the wood as well so it looks seamless.

-------

cake (the gray slabs) just rest on the board.

------

suggest a trick Duff uses -- TWO layers of fondant of the face of phone.
by cutting away topmost layer - can get areas that look indented.
(tho duff often uses chocolate clay for bottom layer and then fondant for top layer)

for area of screen -- definitely two layers -- but cut way both down to crumb coat and then apply a cut to fit edible image. this will allow a very detailed message and use of logo.
-----

if the sell the Razr phone -- it would look really nice as a cake.
