I've never tried to make popcorn out of sugar, but it seems like it would be extremely tedious. Couldn't you just use the real thing? I mean, it's already edible, and it might be nice to already have that something salty to counteract all that sweet icing.

MAke your own popcorn and you don't even need to apply the salt

Over on SweetDreams, Carla (back when she was chickensmommy) made popcorn kernels in a bowl. She said she just piped beads of 2 or 3 different sizes (big in the middle, smaller on the sides) all over. Afterward she went back and touched up here and there with dark brown in the crevices and yellow where she wanted the butter.
Did that help?
