I amin a rut, only been decorting since January but really want to learn more. What books do you all recommend I buy? I am not really interested in wedding cakes just yet but anything else is a go. Thanks.

Oh yeah, cookie books as well.

Most things depend on what you want to look into the most. For basic decorating the Wilton Class books are a good beginning. I usually just look around for books that inspire me and have what i'm looking for at the time. There are alot of really great books out there. If you go somewhere like Barnes & Nobles even, in their cooking section under cookies and cakes you can look through and find some decent books on exactly what you need. Good luck in your searches, wish I could have been of more help!

I like "Decorating Cakes A Reference and Idea Book" by Wilton, it has a lot of info from the Wilton courses as well as additional info, I got it from ebay for about $5 incl. shipping. There is a picture of a pink cake on the cover.

I like the Whimsical Bakehouse because they only make what tastes good which means no fondant or gumpaste flowers icon_smile.gif

I'm all for that too. At the bakery were I work we only make "what tastes good". Meaning no fondant or gumpaste at the present time. Any websites, books etc... I would greatly appreciate!

Thanks for the post patton78 icon_smile.gif

Just thought of my other favorite book..... 'Wedding cakes you can make' by DeDe Wilson. They have elegant but simple cakes... not too simple, but she is another one that doesn't believe in fondant. I was planning on boycotting fondant but now that I read how edible the MMF is and see the incredible things you can do with it, I am no longer so opposed.

I have heard that there are quite a few good tasting fondants such as Choco-pan and Satin Ice (i think). There are several others I just cannot think of the name. I have never had the chance to try them out for myself yet but hear they are really good.

For good recipes, "Cake Bible" by Rose Levy Beranbaum and also "Book of Great Desserts" by Maida Heatter (she is best baker, ever and is really descriptive).

Decorating books: "Sugarcraft" by Merehurst (3 in the series)
and "Essential Guide to Cake Decorating" also by Merehurst

I'd like to add that if I only had the books I mentioned above, I would be fine (wish I had known it years ago when I starting this biz)

Watch Ebay for cake decorating books. I have managed to get all the Wilton yearbooks and most of the pattern books that way. Have to admit that I don't really use them much but I love looking through them. The shipping isn't so bad on books as they send them media mail.
