But I am not sure. My 2 qusetion is what is the best thing to cover the ply wood base and is a 20 inch square the right size for this cake or should I go bigger. I like to cover boards with either white contact paper or scrapbook/wrapping paper with clear contact over it.

so the WASC goes excellent with raspberry, but it also goes excellent with just about anything you can think of! i think choc goes best with lighter fillings, (unless you are a die hard choc lover) so i like to pair it with vanilla mousse, vanilla BC, orange, raspberry, cherry, etc. but if she is a die hard choc lover, choc ganache would be good too. does that help at all? and i think 20 inch board would be a good size. i like to keep my boards 4 inches larger than the cake. i would cover it with pretty fabric or wrapping paper, and then contact paper. i do love the look of fondant covered boards, but i know it would be a challenge to make a piece of fondant 22+ inches. but if you can do it, i think it would look lovely!

Can I use the paper that they sell in the store to cover cake boards to cover the ply wood or will it just rip?? I am just scared to use a paper product to cover the base!

When I've used wrapping paper to cover my boards, I use clear contact paper on top to keep it grease free. Some people don't like using contact paper though.

Sure, you can use the foil to cover plywood boards. It does rip fairly easily so just be careful.
