If you go with the music theme, maybe something simple lie music notes. 17 year old boys probably don't really care for cute cakes. I suggest the more simple, the better. But that is just me!

how about a buttercream transfer of a guitar or something...or an edible image of his favorite CD cover? Then you can add in Happy Birthday somewhere.

Maybe you could find out his favorite sport, and use that as the theme. Otherwise, I thought of the guitar idea as well. Good luck!

Find out what bands he likes. Maybe you could copy an album cover or a t-shirt of the band. I've done several band cakes, if you click on my web page on my signature line. One of my "albums" is called Bands, Instruments, and Music ... clik on that.

You can never go wrong with his favorite sports team!

My St. Louis Cardinals and KC Chiefs cakes are popular with the boys! thumbs_up.gif

My husband loves the Chiefs and my mom (being a St. Louis girl) loves the Rams...quite entertaining to listen to the two of them go at it! icon_rolleyes.gif

I have and idea for both. . .

Sports:
You could cover the cake in green fondant and then around the sides out of icing or fondant u should make basketballs, footballs, soccerballs etc. and stick them to the side.

Music:
The same only do a different color background fondant and make guitars and cds out of fondant to put on the sides.

ANd on either of them u could put happy 17th bday ____

Hope I helped!

I like the idea of fondant sports or gum paste equipment...Just simple lines and colors cut out and attached the sides of the cake. Since most people prefer the taste of buttercream I would use it. Green would contrast nicely with the white, black and brown of most balls, etc.

The top of the cake could be a baseball diamond or a football field...Stand a score board that says happy birthday and shows his age in the score box. You could make the scoreboard of gumpaste.

when my boys were that age, they really didn't have any sports fav's and although they liked music, never wanted a bday cake with that theme. Mine liked skateboarding and bike jumping, so I made a big dirt pile on a cake and went from there!

I recently did a cake for a teen boy, and it was a HIT! I made a simple round, 3-layer 12" cake, and then frosted in white buttercream. Then, I took the cans of spray on color (wilton has these, or betty crocker), in three primary colors....Red, Blue and Yellow. I did tye-dye all over the cake....to do this, you make several circles which look tye dye. You take the yellow spray and make the center of a circle, about a 2" center, then spray the blue around this circle in a jagged tye dye fashion, blending into the edge of the yellow. Make a red jagged circle around the blue, and do these circles all over the cake. It looks like tye-dye or pschadellic, "sixties" looking patterns. The boy and his friends loved it, and I have had 3 more orders for these since! Also, I propped some real CD's around the cake randomly, like they were just sitting around.

I agree that sports would be a great idea. Is he still in high school? How about his high school mascot with the sports theme. If you go with music. I was thinking of a winding music staff with simple notes on it, to make it look like the music was being played. Add a couple of CD or headphones, or a musical instrument, if he plays one, would be easy to do.
