I am making figurines that the instructions call for sugar paste. My question is, is gum paste the same as sugar paste?

Thanks

Sugarpaste is fondant. Flowerpaste is gumpaste.

don't assume. Sugarpaste can also mean gumpaste.

That's what I've been told when I attended demos in the U.K.

Ive also heard sugarpaste as gumpaste. Since she is doing figures, she might want to use gumnpaste anyways if she needs the added strenght. Or even 50/50.

So, I can use gum paste to make figurines. Well actually I am making can-can dancers, (I think that's what they are called) It will just be their legs on top of small 3" cakes. the legs look they are coming out of the cakes, with feet up in the air and a ruffled skirt on each one.

I would definetly use gumpaste instead of fondant for that! You wont have as much of a problem with it springing back like you would with fondant and it will hold up better.
Mirel dont you agree?

Yes I agree. Gumpaste for those figurines.

I'm confused now...I own many books from the UK, and they refer to sugarpaste as fondant and modelling paste as gumpaste.

What you call it depends on where you come from - sugarpaste to me, is fondant....modelling paste is gumpaste / flowerpaste icon_biggrin.gif

I'm not arguing one way or the other - just saying that if you just do a quick google on "sugarpaste" and read various sites you will see some are referring to fondant, some to gumpaste, and some just use the term genericly for fondant, gumpaste, and pastillage.
