I finished this cake at 1:00 AM in the morning after having a very loooong day. I finished it and was short one letter and had another leftover, so I though I just accidentally cut the wrong letter or miss counted. I cut out the one I noticed I had forgotten and placed it on. I read over it and thought it was fine. They picked it up at 8:30 AM for a 9:00 AM ceremony. I loaded the pic onto my computer just now and noticed immediately why I had a letter leftover!! I can't believe I sent a cake out with a missing letter! It was for a military promotion ceremony! When I read it to double check it, I guess my brain read what it knew was supposed to be there rather than what was there. This is so embarrassing! icon_redface.gif

Do you think they were annoyed when they noticed, or would laugh it off? I hope they weren't upset. How would you feel if there was such an obvious error on your cake?

The cake is absolutely gorgeous. Very unique and very professional looking. I wish I could do a design like that on a cake. I think some people will notice that you left off the T, but I don't think they will make a big deal out of it. It looks nice and I'm sure it tastes good.

if it was a paid order, i think i would call and at least apologize. if its for a ceremony with lots of people, you can bet someone there noticed and told everyone else! you don't want them feeling upset, so call and maybe offer 5% off next order or something to make them feel better.

yep I am with Doug on this one. We all make mistakes. One time I actually delivered a wedding cake and forgot the topper!!
Thankfully the Bride had a sense of humor, and I am sure you will find your clients will too. Besides the cake is fantastic either way icon_smile.gif

The cake is great, however, I would call them and apologize and offer them a small discount on their next order since they were paying clients. But your cake is gorgeous!!

How did you do the army camouflage?

There were about 100 people at the event. I'm sure it was noticed by some. They did not pay full price since they are my husbands old unit. I don't have numbers for any of them, but I will be telling my husband about it and I'm sure I'll have fun talking with them about it. (He'll think it's funny, even if I don't.) We'll see what they have to say.

As for the decorating part, the only instructions they gave me was to make it look like their ACU's. (The new uniforms that came out a few years ago as opposed to the older uniforms, the BDU.) (I hope it looks enough like the newer uniforms.) Anyways, I had to mix all the colors to get the right shades (as I don't have three shades of dirty green) and then airbrushed it on free hand. Pretty simple, but a little time consuming.

Thanks everyone.

re the missing 'T' - I wouldn't worry - it could have been worse - you could have missed the 'S' off and called it the 'tart up' unit!!

I was stupid at my daughters baby shower. I did the whole shower and wrote congratulations on the cake, just to find out I left the 't' out. I was soooo tired when I made the cake and I didn't notice until my mother said that she has seen me write 'congratulations' on countless cakes and I mess up on my own daughters.

I left out the word "of" on a retirement cake for the Administrative Assistant for my son's Army Reserve unit. Even worse - I didn't catch it - someone at the party did! icon_redface.gif

Edited to add: Everyone still loved the design and the flavor.

Oh my 1st year of biz, I did the best looking Elmo head I thought I had ever done. It was beautiful. LOL So I went on to write the inscription that was given to me, perfect once again. I go to deliver the cake, get in the driveway of the house...look the cake over once again ('cause by now, I am soooooo proud of myself)...BAM, "Happy Birtday". Freaked out of course but they loved the cake and laughed at me...she was a friend of my cousin's and we would always see each other at parties, she never let me live it down. LOL. I now slowly spell out my letters when I'm writing, in my head or even write down a word as simple as birthday so I won't forget the "H" again. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I've done this too icon_cry.gificon_biggrin.gif .

But now you have something you'll be able to look back on and laugh about. Not to mention, all the teasing that will come. If I did that for my husbands work they would never let it go. icon_lol.gif

Don't feel too badly. At least your mistake didn't make the newspaper. I have the picture saved somewhere. A school was celebrating a spelling bee. They had a local bakery make a cake. It said, "Congratulations Your All Great Spellers!" Can you imagine? Making a lovely cake, having it appear in the paper -- for the WRONG reason??!! Now THAT is embarrassing!

mekaclayton, that is my biggest fear. To misspell "Happy Birthday." I'm glad to know someone did and is alive to talk about it. icon_lol.gif I now have it printed out and taped to the back of my icing recipe! My DH thinks it's funny. Especially when all the kids' names (I only do stuff for neighbors and nieces) are different or even odd:
KyLeigh (capital K & L!!)
Daisey (My SIL claims she wanted the "e" -- she did NOT misspell it! I don't believe her!)
Savannah
Isabella
Cuauhtemoc
Caden
ETC!

You did a great job on the cake BTW, SweetArt! Camo is harder than it looks!

Last summer I spelled Congratulations Congradulations on four graduation cakes, until at the fifth one the father told me. icon_redface.gificon_redface.gif
I cant even look at those pictures these days and I still have to remind myself to put a T, not a D. If anyone says anything just tell them you wanted make sure they were paying attention. icon_lol.gif

Sugar Shock - my first thought was that congradulations just sounds like a corny pun on GRADuation, rather than a spelling mistake!

I need to go to bed. I had to read it a few times to figure out where the T was suppose to be. icon_redface.gif

Great cake though.

There was an episode of Laverne & Shirley where Shirley made a banner for Mrs. Babish's (sp?) daughter for her graduation... but didn't have enough room to put "Congratulations on your Graduation", so she put "ConGRADUATIONS!"

I always think of that when I'm doing a graduation cake...

The last Birthday cake I did for a friend I put the wrong age on it and she still loved it. I'm sure most didnt even notice. Also on another cake the at a wedding I was setting up for the top tier fell off and there was no fixing that so I just had to make something work and I was talking to the bride and she didnt even notice that a whole tier was gone. icon_smile.gif

THE CAKE LOOKS FINE!!

Hubby's unit probably had a great chuckle....why don't you send a cake shaped like a "T" for his staff meeting. You know, "here's the missing T" or something...ha ha ha .... would be funny and you'd be remembered for your cakes & also for correcting your Typos! icon_biggrin.gif
