I want to try this on a cake but I hate to ruin my cake and icing and filling start all over again if I don't do the carving of the edges right. Is there a no fail way to do it or am I better off trying on a practice cake. This cake is for class tomorrow. One more thing what is the deal with the bottle I so did not understand what I'm supposed to do with it icon_redface.gif

If your talking about smoothing the cake with the paper towel, it's pretty much no fail. Just make sure your icing crust first. Then lay your design free paper towel over you cake and run something over it, like you spatula or something. I use my fondant smoother. I'm not sure what you are referring to as far as the bottle. hth

Maybe they use the bottle to run over the paper towel to smooth it out? But I'd rather use a spatula!!!

If you want a design you can use other types of towels. If you look in my photos I made a Dora cake and tweety/Sylvester cake with a designed papertowel. I loved the effect! I used it also on another cake(the one with purple flowers) I have many kinds of papertowels in my cake decorating closet, with lots of different designs.

Do you have the fondant smoother? It looks like a mini iron. When you use it on the cake it's kind of like ironing. It's real easy. ha ha What a comparison. If you don't that long spatula would work great too. Pootchi what a good idea about using the patterns. I thought about that, but was to chicken to try it. I'm glad you mentioned that. Now, I will have to try it.

If I remember correctly the "bottle" thing was to get your top edges rounded perfectly. It's been awhile since I looked at the tutorial but what they did is cut a two liter bottle in half then curved it around the top edge to get a rounded effect. IF my memory is correct. I have started using the Viva and all I use is my hands, very carefully smooth with my palms and then kind of curve over the edge to do the sides. It works pretty good but I also only make my cakes for family, as of yet, so I don't obsess either. Cake doesn't last long enough to worry about how smooth I got it. icon_biggrin.gif

I just use my hand over the paper towel to smooth it.

The bottle is to smooth the edges. But I never used that method before. So I can't help there.

I also use paper towels with patterns on some of my cakes. They make GREAT background designs! thumbs_up.gif

The bottle was mentioned in the faux fondant method. I didnt quite understand it either. If someone would explain it would be appreciated. Thanks Cheffie icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

Is the bottle just for making it look like a fondant cake with rounded edges maybe? I can't remember but, in the demo I was thinking it was a cake that was rounded off first then iced.

As far as I understood, the bottle was cut in the shape of a kidney bean and was used to create a rounded edge on the cake (like that of fondant). I'm not sure that it is very simple...I would rather use my hands and a spatula! I did this on my Dale Jr. cake with a disign on the towel...my family that it was really cool! I wa excited to try it and impressed at how it turned out.

Good luck! ~Aimee
