Ok, so I took my first Wilton class in February, 2006. But I didn't do my first "order" until June of 2006. You all are SO talented and on this website I feel like a minnow with a bunch of sharks. But in my town, people are always complimenting me.
Here is my thing. I am going to have to turn this into a business if I keep doing it. It is too costly to just do it as a favor. I mean, people do pay me but I don't charge very much. For example, I did a wedding cake for 180 and I charged $275. Now, I had to buy a pan and then all of the cake and ingredients so I am pretty sure I didn't make a profit.
I guess this is my question...do you all think I have what it takes to make money doing this or should I drop my bag of icing and run like hell??
I have upload some of my pictures for you all.
Please give your most HONEST opinion.
Thanks
Casey
You are a newbie to cake decorating, and after viewing your photos, in my humble opinion you definitely have talent. No doubt!!
There is a lot of outstanding talent out there but don't sell yourself short before you even get really started.
The question is do you have the passion and the commitment to do what you need to do to keep improving your skills and business smarts to take it to the next level??? or would you rather have it as a hobby. I firmly believe that there is room enough for anyone who wants it bad enough. Not everyone will be a Weinstock or Duff, but that's what keeps cake design so fascinating and fresh.
You will develop your own style and will maintain your own following. Who knows where the jouney will lead...
Good Luck!!!! ![]()
Definitely keep going--you're very good! ![]()
Even if you have to work another job for a while to make ends meet, (*clears throat audibly here*
) then you can still do that and practice your art, too!
I for one would LOVE to have my own little "cake bistro" type place. I'm not sure if it's ever in the cards, though. I've got one to help through life, (son) another to get through high-school (son), a husband who wants to retire early, a mother with Alzheimer's who's 300 miles away, and several needy friends!

This is something I use like "therapy." Although it's not quite as expensive as traditional therapy. Plus, every now and then--I get a few extra bucks off of it! ![]()
You obviously love decorating, too--and you're good at it!
Go with your heart.

You have got talent for sure. I don't know what it is about cake people but we all seem to doubt ourselves. Maybe it's the fact that so many of our cakes come from our "creative" sides and we really feel like they're a representation of ourselves which makes it hard to judge without bias. Anyway, your cakes really are good. I'm in the same boat, too. My first class was March of this year and I am fortunate enough to be part of a big family so I've been able to practice just on family alone for the most part. I still feel like I need another 6 months to a year of steady cake baking before I'd be comfortable to go outside of that circle. But, of course, I'm in Missouri and I am pretty sure where I live that I'd need to have a separate kitchen and ALL sorts of regulations to bake from home so I'm almost afraid to do research and find out what it would take.
Don't doubt your talent, though. The talent is there, as well as the passion. Keep taking those "leaps" . . . you'll be happy you did.
