Hi, newbie here!
Wondering how you are supposed to serve a 3D cake, like the Wilton Sports Ball or the 3D Jack-o-lantern? Just in giant slabs sliced off of the side? Why don't the instructions say anything about that? Hopefully it's not because this is the dumbest question ever! ![]()
Thanks!
I am so glad you posed this question.
I have wondered this myself. I have made them several times fror clients but I have always wondered, "howdya serve that"? Yes... I said howdya. I'm from Texas ok.
Hoping someone can answer your question. Bump.
I have a better question... If its the "Evil Bear" cake is it considered rude to yell out "off with its head" before serving?
I wondered the same thing when it came time to serve the bridal shower cake that's in my photos. Unfortunately I didn't give it much thought until I was standing there with knife in hand and a dumbfounded look on my face! I ended up cutting wedge-shaped slices out of it (which were WAY too tall to be one serving) and then chopping that up into several pieces to make smaller sections.
I guess it's kind of like eating corn on the cob in public; I don't really think there is a graceful way to go about it! ![]()
I cheated with the Jack-o-lantern cake. I cut the cake in half (horizontally) before icing it, and inserted a cake circle, cut to the size and shape of the cake. Then, when I cut the cake from the top (into wedges), they were half-height and a good size. When that was all cut, I removed the cardboard, and cut the bottom half in the same manner. Next time, I think I'd flip it before cutting, which would give it a more stable base.

I have cut the sports ball cake...I cut a big long slab across, and then cut that into half or thirds, depending on the part of the cake I just cut. I put on such thick icing, there is plenty of icing on it to compliment the cake.
I am doing a bear cake next month for a customer and it is for a kids bday party. I am also wondering how you cut that thing...should i advice her to take it into another room? It has to be tramatic for a small child to see arms and legs and heads being cut off! hahaha!
Thanks for asking the question and welcome to CC...Best of luck to you ![]()
I make a horizontal cut about 2" down all the way across and then cut vertically into appropriate size pieces.
As for kids being upset about cutting up the animal mosst kids I've seen argue about what part they get and that's even the really little ones.
Might be just the kids I know. I would think that if you have a kid who's going to get upset it wouldn't matter if the cake was cut in front of them or not since the pieces are obviously body parts. Just my thoughts.
I always put my 3D cakes that are on a basecake on their own boards, when I cut the ball or bear, I cut it in half vertically then slice it up, depending on size of slices wanted I may slice the half in half again and then slice. That way everyone gets cake and outside icing.

thats a good idea...the bear I am doing is sitting on a 12 inch cake. I was going to suggest removing the bear...I will suggest the cutting in half before removing and then laying down those pieces and cutting...
