Ok. I have a question. I'm doing a stacked (square) cake and this will be my first. I've read alot of info about doweling and checked the back of the wilton book..... Call me in idiot, but if I use a board under the top layer, how am I going to get a long dowel through both cakes? Do remove a circle from the board and hope you go through it?

I definitely need to dowel this cake as it will travel from home to work (30 miles) switch hands, then home with my coworker (45 miles the other direction). It will probably have about 2 hours out of the fridge.

If you use a pencil sharpener and sharpen the end of the dowel you can get it through the cake without incident. I just did one today (my first) and that's what I did (on the advice of many from CC). Once I got to the board I just kinda twisted the dowel and without much force it went right in. Some say to use a hammer. but that freaks me out! I'd probably drop the darn thing right on the cake!

Good luck!!

Thanks so much. I never would have imagined it would go through. Do you ever worry about the tip breaking off in the cake? Sorry, elementary nightmare I guess....

I did worry about that, but once I had it sharpened I fidled with the tip a little and it didn't budge.
I really was amazed it worked too! icon_biggrin.gif
