I have a small village show on Monday which will be the first time I've shown any of my cakes or done any marketing on a big scale. It will attract about 300 people and is fairly small but all the people there will be local, so good for me, hopefully.

I'm making three cake dummies - one handbag, one stack of cushions with a Cinderella shoe on top and one wedding cake. I'm also making some smaller cakes to sell, and some decorated biscuits. The best bit is that I've made myself a dress with wedding cake print fabric!!

Anyway I've been preparing for this show for six weeks now (I'm a teacher on summer holidays) but the last week has been manically busy with all the cookie decorating (120 of them) and dummy making etc. It's nearly 10pm here and I think I'm going to die of exhaustion.

The blasted pastillage I made isn't setting hard enough, the cushions are wonky, I haven't sewn the hem on the dress and I've got 120 cookies to bag and sticker up, my dog needs a walk, I should probably eat something and I am beat. I have to do the bows for the smaller cakes tonight or they won't dry in time. Someone wave me a fary godmother wand please... icon_cry.gif

Sounds like it's time to grab a granola bar & bottle of water and take that dog (& yourself!) out for a quick walk and breath of fresh air!

And if you can't finish your dress...just wear a classic favorite. I'd focus on your products first since that's what people will be there for.

You can do it! thumbs_up.gif

You make the most fabulous cakes!!! I have little doubt that your cakes will turn out just perfect. Take a deep breath and allow yourself a break. Not only will you feel refreshed, but getting away from the project will allow you to regroup! Good luck on Monday!

I waited for the right moment to post my first post and here it is. I WISH I could come over and help you. I only make cakes as a hobby and just finished two cakes for a bridal shower last week (will post pictures eventually). Since then I've become totally addicted to this website and am ITCHING to make another cake and try the cool things I've read about here.

Anyway, I love your cakes. Good luck with everything. It's fun and stressful and the same time, isn't it?

Thank you guys, you're fab. I took the dog for a walk and thought she was unusually clingy, for a little moment I thought she was sensing my stress and trying to help out in her small doggy way. Turns out I'd forgotten to feed her for the first time ever in her life - she's now gobbling up a late tea!

Going to bed now, safe in the knowledge that there are people on the other side of the world to me that are wishing me well - thank you guys

Best of luck to you!

And don't worry about hemming that dress. That's what duct tape is for!! (not joking! I use it or masking tape for emergency repairs when I photograph events like weddings)

Looks like the pictures of the cakes are in her gallery and they are stunning...of course! thumbs_up.gif There are some real artists here on this site. After so much hard work how could anyone cut into a cake like those and eat them?

Sorry guys - it's wednesday today, I meant to post a report yesterday! The day started with a minor disaster. I decorated 100 cookies - handbags, shoes, dresses etc. with piping, glitter and shimmer dusts and they were all bagged up individually, between layers of bubble wrap in a tray in the car and my dear other half dumped a heavy box on top of them. When I unpacked them half of them were broken. I had to try really hard not to cry and not to make him feel bad. I sold ALL the cookies I had so assuming I would have sold the broken ones (had they not been broken!) I lost about £40 ($70?)

I had three dummies there, pictured below, and they attracted a lot of attention. Kids tried to grab them and made me age a year each time one did. I had several serious wedding cake enquiries, lots of cards were taken and a wedding planner had a long chat with me too and wanted to call me to discuss her clients etc. It wasn't a cake show, or even a wedding or craft show so the people there weren't looking for cakes, but I was HUGELY busy and think it went well. Thanks for all your wonderful suggestions and support.

Thank you so much for letting us know about your experience. I am not suprised you got so much attention!! Your cakes are magnificent!!! I am so sorry that you had the mishap with the cookies, as I'm sure you would have sold them had they not gotten broken. I predict you will get a lot of business from the exposure!! You cakes are fantastic and my favorite is Swirlslandpearls.

I love the swirls and pearls one too - I just hope that some bride somewhere wants it for her wedding. I keep getting enquiries from people wanting flowers cascading down their cakes (yawn) and I'm dying for someone to want something a bit different. I keep thinking that if I make them someone will want one!

Your cakes are AMAZING! I too love the Swirls and Pearls. I'm so jealous! ( icon_rolleyes.gif ...oh, to have half of the talent, icon_lol.gif ...in your little finger, for working with fondant!)

For future reference: I used to work in a bakery, broken cookie make excellent "samples"! Prospective customers get to taste your work, and small children wanting a cookie always have parents with them, with $$$$!)
