Well, two thirds of the stress is over. I fiinished my first wedding cake and now I just have to take it 10 miles to the hall. Thanks to everyone who answered my questions and gave me pointers over the past three months. Oddly, I was more stressed out for the months leading up to today than I was on the actual day of assembly. Go figure. Anyway, I know it's no work of art but I think it passes inspection, plus I will be putting red roses and petals on it at the hall. Honest opinions would really be appreciated so that I can learn from my mistakes. Thanks again everyone at CC!!
Good job on your first wedding cake. Hope the transport goes well. Please do post a picture with the flowers.

Honestly? You want an HONEST opinion?
IT'S GORGEOUS!!! ![]()
Your corners look great. And I like the way you varied your bead borders, going larger at the bottom and then working up to the top--they get smaller to match the layer size! ![]()
That's good work. Looks like a lot of cake! ![]()

I will have the final pictures tonight. Thanks for the kind words. One thing that suprised me about this cake was how heavy it is! OMG, I hope my girlfriend and I can move it to the van without incident. It muse weigh 50 lbs! It's like lifting a case of copy paper! I have to say thought, the dowel process wasn't too bad. I had some length issues (kept cutting too long or too short) but once I got that right, the stacking went pretty smoothly. Whew!
You did a wonderful job! It looks like you've done tons of them before! Very pretty! I can't wait to see the pics with the roses!
Very pretty. Good luck with the transport. I'm always a nervous wreck when it comes to transporting my cakes.
Just curious...how many of you took the Wilton classes? I took Wilton I and enjoyed it but then I had a baby and lost any free time I had so I haven't been back in three years. I guess I should start at the beginning but are any of you self-taught? This site seems to be better than any class out there.
Congrats on a job well done. If that is your first then your next will be spectacular. Just one question is it just the pic or does the icing seem thin in some spots? I am being honest here so I hope no one thinks me rude as I, like you prefer when people tell me the truth so I can learn.
Hi sheronc -
First, your cake is beautiful. I bet the bride and groom will be thrilled with it!!!
Second, I was self-taught for 6 years then took the Wilton courses. It was so much easier learning hands on than by looking at pictures and reading how to do things. Our instructor is really great!!! She would watch as we were working on things and tell us what we should change to make it better and easier. So, in MHO, I would say to at least pick up on the classes where you left off, but if it is possible to start over, go for it because they are also so much fun and they get me out of the house once a week. Have fun!!!
It looks great! I haven't wanted to do weddings so I hope mine looks as great as yours. Do you have fillings? What frosting did you use?
Great job!
To answer your other question, I am self taught. Most everything that I learned was from Wilton books/magazines/yearbooks. I've learned a lot on the internet too.
I signed up for a class but there was not enough people signed up so they cancelled it. If I ever do take classes it would be for gumpaste and such.
The cake looks great!! I have a question for some of you, too, as I haven't done any wedding cakes yet. Is it easier to put the cake together at home or do most of you put it together at the site of the wedding? I think I'd be a nervous wrecK if I tried to transport a cake already put together (so, good job!!!)

Well, I'm back.
I wish I had the photos with the roses but as luck would have it, I got to the hall and the bride didn't tell me that there was another wedding in the banquet hall so I couldn't bring the cake inside. I had to convice the owner to let me put the cake in their kitchen somewhere out of the way. Otherwise, I was going to have to drive it back home and wait. She found a spot out of the way for it and I told her the florist was coming at 3 so I would need to get access to it for the finishing touches. So....I waited and waited and waited. No florist. It was now 4:00 and still no florist. I waited as long as I could before I finally had to tell the bride I was leaving. What more could I do? The florist had supposedly made a cake topper out of the red roses that I was going to place on top and then I was going to stick some roses in at different spots. Then sprinkle some petals around the layers and the base. I told one of the bridesmaids whom I knew what to do and she said she would take care of it and email me the photos. I feel like crap though because I really wanted to finish it myself. Has this ever happened to anyone else before? My biggest worry was the transport which went fine but I never anticipated the florist not showing up! Disaster!
I'm so sorry . . . how disappointing! It looked fabulous as you did it, and I'm sure that the florist eventually showed up. Florists regularly do finish off the cakes (it is hard to let them be the ones to finish it), and I'm sure it looked fabulous. Hopefully, you'll get to see a picture soon.
