I stayed up till 3 AM last night doing the "Coach Purse" cake in my photos for my first real customer (one I don't know). I left it on the counter away from the edge so my little ones wouldn't be able to reach it and stick their finger in it (my kids' main goal when I do cakes, they love the icing). Well, DH decided to take care of the kids this morning and let me sleep in (so sweet). As he was getting toast out of the toaster for the kids, he turned away and pulling the toast out swiped the whole top quarter and corner of the cake with the toast! The fondant frim was broken, the icing was scraped off right down to the cake and a piece of the corner of the cake was missing... I woke up to "I messed the corner of the cake up a little bit." icon_cry.gif I first thought he was joking but he said, "No really, I messed it up a little." I jumped out of bed and my eyes welled up with tears upon seeing it! All this two hours away from when I needed to deliver it to the lady. Well with about 15 minutes and 1/4 cup of icing that I reluctantly kept in the fridge "just in case" I was able to restore it not to perfect but to okay and passable... Save your icing ladies!!

Thank goodness you could save it and it didn't end up on the floor. I'll bet DH felt horrible! I'm sure the last thing he wanted to do was to wake you up and tell you he messed it up "just a little". YIKES! My hubby would probably get out the spackle or something! icon_biggrin.gif

Yikes! icon_surprised.gif

I always hang on to my icing until the cake is out of the house and/or delivered. In fact, when I deliver cakes I take my filled icing bags with me. I learned my lesson the hard way.

It's funny because my husband is always telling me I need to through the stuff out because I have like a million colors of icing in the fridge. Just goes to show I need to keep doing what I'm doing. And yes, he did feel bad for doing that... he kept telling me to, "Just tell them I did it." He didn't know it was for an actual customer and not for a friend or family member. When I told him it was for a real customer I could see it hit him like a ton of bricks... he stayed out on the pourch until I finished fixing it then came back in and sincerly appologized... how sweet is that. Can't live with 'em. Can't live without 'em.

one thing to think about - find a place in the house for finished cakes that aren't near other activities, if that is possible. or invert a plastic box over top or something. that's what I do, anyway.

You got to love dh's. I got an order 8:30 this morning for a 3 tiered stacked baby shower cake with the mini 3d bear on top. She wanted to feed 80 people. The catch, she wanted for 2 pm today. Got it down, very simple borders and decos. Dh went to move it so he could pick it up and promptly sthuck his fingers in a corner of the cake. The look on his face was priceless. icon_lol.gif . Patched it and off we went to deliver it.

jo_ann - stupid newbie question.... How in the world did you get it done so fast?? Don't think I could have even gotten everything baked that fast, never mind decorated & delivered!

With the help of my dh. He ran to the store to pick up things I needed while I started the cakes. Needless to say she also wanted carrot cakes (they take forever to bake). He also made bc icing while I got other things ready and he cut and covered the boards for me while he kept washing the dishes. He's definitely a keeper. And it was 5 cakes because I had extra batter left so I decorated a 8" round for her for free because she was worried about feeding 80 people. We got it there a 5 minutes to 2. Told her next time to give me more notice please. icon_razz.gif
