A friend of mine wants me to do her wedding cake in March 08. I am sooo not ready to do a wedding cake. I even showed her all my pics of cakes I have done and still she said she wants me to do it. She has faith in me!!! HA!!!! I don't..... I really dont want to dissapoint her but i just dont think i can create a good enough cake for that. Should i just calm down and wait it out, maybe she will find someone else. Or should i just deal with it and not worry about it. I know i will have plenty of practice between now and then as i have two cakes for next weekend for a benefit and plenty of holidays and birthdays in between. Oh what should i do??????

Congratulations on your first wedding cake!! You still have a lot of months to practice before the event so sit down, take a deep breath and chill! icon_biggrin.gif You'll be fine thumbs_up.gif

Calm down and get her to start looking at designs so you can make some practice cakes using those designs and techniques.

You should take a deep breath, smile and relaxicon_smile.gif
She obviously has enough faith in your to be able to do it, so regardless she is getting what she asked for icon_smile.gif
Shes seen your work and its what she is looking for so thats a huge compliment to you and your professionalism as a decorator icon_smile.gif
In the meantime, wear out your whisk practicing your head off and by March of 08 you will be a seasoned pro...don't think of it as a "wedding cake"...think of it as a "really big pretty cake" icon_smile.gif Don't stress..everythiing will be just fine! icon_smile.gif

Just calm down and breath. March is a ways away, you have plenty of time to practice and hone your skills. My suggestion is to pick a simple but elegant design so you don't have anything to crazy to worry yourself about. it's funny how others have more faith in us than we do. You will do fine, I looked at your cakes and they are lovely. Just practice pratice practice.

OOO! i agree totally! I just had a friend email me and she said she DEFINITELY wants me to do her cake in Sept. 08! I was like wow! i have a lot of time to practice!

Do you have the option of taking a class to gain some more confidence?? I also make sure that I show people pictures of things I know I can do! I know that sounds selfish but, if I know I can't do cornelli lace then I wouldn't tell a customer i could! It's kind of simple like that!
I think you will be fine! Lots of practice till then and just stick with CC for advice and help!

My best friend did that to me too and until then I had ONLY made like 6 bday cakes for my son!!! YIKES! But... tell her what techniques you can do, what you think you could learn and the practice and revise as it goes.

I know my best friend said that it meant so much more to her than just a "cake" as it was made by her best friend with a lot of love - and she's right. And honestly, I think because it is a friend doing it, they are more forgiving of any flaws... a lot of it is the thought - really!

I saw your pictures - you are ready... have fun!

Think of the wedding cake as just a bunch of single cakes, put together. Don't look at it as one big project. You'll have plenty of time to practice, and just don't offer to do something that is way, way beyond your comfort level. She's obviously got faith in you, so go for it!

You can easily do it - I have seen your photos.

I felt the same last year when a friend asked me to make her wedding cake (and I hadn't done any where near as much as you have). But we sat down and chose a relatively simple design that we both liked and it was fine.

The sense of achievement afterwards is well worth it.

Good Luck

I can't wait to do my first wedding cake. It's a race between a friend of mine and my sister. My friend's girls asys he needs to pick the date but her and I have designed their cake and as for my sister, maybe big bro needs to light a fire under her bf's butt and get him to pop the question since we've designed her cake as well!

I looked at your photos and I think you're ready icon_wink.gif I would take some time and practice with whatever she wants you to make for her and when all is said and done with each practice cake you can give it to her family or your family or donate it to a food bank place or a homeless shelter... and you've made someones day and felt better yourself and gotten the practice you feel you need to do her cake icon_wink.gif

go with what you know. as in styles you've already become comfortable with- and then practice some others icon_smile.gif

one thing i learned is the ones that LOOK simple are actually more complicated and take much longer to do.

at least thats how it always worked for me lol!
