I'm not "fond" of the taste fondant covered cakes, although they are beautiful! But I would love to decorate with it. I'm making a red velvet cake for my daughters birthday and was wondering if anyone had ever put fondant cut-outs on a regular frosted cake and if they had any suggestions or problems.

Any help would be appreciated!

It is done all the time. If you use MArshmallow Fondant, it has such a better taste than the packaged fondants. Just moisten the back og the fondant to get it to stick to the frosting.

I have used fondant cutouts on my granddaughters dance recital cake which was buttercream icing...with no problems at all. I agree I do not like the taste of fondant at all and wish I could find a way to make it taste better because it does make a beautiful smooth cake. Good luck

I always use water to attach fondant to buttercream. My DH (who is diabetic) loves the taste of fondant icon_eek.gif He is the only person I know, however, who does. icon_lol.gif

I attach fondant all the time to get special decorations on a cake. I'm no expert but I just use a little of my buttercream on the back to attach them. My hula girl cake and my swimming cake in my pictures has fondant on them.

Turtledee...I just uploaded a pink baby shower cake with fondant cut-outs on the clothesline...and also daisies. Very simple technique. I also used Wilton's edible markers to draw on the fondant pieces. Satin Ice is a better tasting fondant than Wilton. Still....it's not as good as buttercream!

I just wanted to thank everyone for their info and words of encouragement! I did use the Wilton colored fondant and cut out little flowers and attached them with water onto my cream cheese frosting. It all worked out great & everyone loved the cake! Especially the birthday girl & that was all that really mattered! icon_smile.gif

Thanks again!

My family doesn't like fondant covered cake, but I do like using fondant accents. To attach them to buttercream I have used the icing itself as well as piping gel.
