I really wish I could take credit for the writing but I can't. I use the make any message letter press set from Wilton. (don't know if that's the right name, it's something like that) I have horrible writing on and off cakes so I need assistance!
Thanks for the wonderful compliments! ![]()
Do you think I should have added something else? It seems kind of bare to me now. I wanted to do the borders the same color as the writing but my husband said it would be too much.
How much would you charge for this cake? It's a 12 x 18 and a 4.5 x 5.5 no fillings the bible was not thick enough to fill and I don't know how to fill the 12 x 18 without breaking the cake.....can anyone tell me how I could do this please?
To fill a cake that size, I always use my large Wilton cake leveler and adjust the height so that it tortes the layers. To pick the cut layer up, I use two large cake lifters that I got from Pampered Chef years ago. They are two indispensible items when I am doing my cakes. I have yet to break a cake this way. OOPS..... Now I probably jinxed myself!!!! Your cake is lovely.
What a wonderful cake, the bible is great and the gold lettering looks perfect. Don't think you need anything else on it. If this is short notice, your cakes that you plan out with pleanty of time must be fantastic!!! Thanks for sharing the photo.
It is just beautiful gibson! You did a wonderful job!! I love it!!!
When I fill large cakes, I use a large cake board covered with foil. Once my cake is torted, I wedge the cake board in between untill the top is all on the board and lift off. When I put it back on, I line up one side and just start to slide it off the cake board keeping it very close to the bottom layer. Goes on perfect without breaking.
That is absolutely beautiful!! If you wanted to add something, I saw where Doug suggested to someone to use gold luster dust on the white borders, just a nice little shading of gold. I saw a picture afterward (sorry, don't remember who or where it was here) and it was really nice.
Gibson, it's time for you to realize that you do really really good work!! You always doubt yourself, yet you come through with flying colors!! Great job!
When I torte a cake that size, I use a cookie sheet that I have with a straight edge to lift it and slide it onto the bottom of the pan I cooked it in (the pan turned upside down), then slide it back with the help of that big, flat cookie sheet.
Thanks everyone for the wonderful compliments and the tips on how to torte the 12 x 18 cake.
karateka: I think it's funny you asked me how I get my cake so smooth, I thought it was not a very good job and am always wondering how the members here smooth their cakes so well. That is one thing I actually cringe at doing. I used the crusting buttercream recipe from this site then used paper towel and then computer paper with a fondant smoother. Tips I found here reading through "how to" forums.
auntsushi: This cake was for a young man of mormon religion. I guess when they come of age (I think 19ish) they go on missions - spreading the word in different parts of the world. I looked up the religion online and found the quote on their website - where it explained what the young men do.
Thanks again for all of the compliments! You guys are great!![]()
I agree with everyone else - the cake is FANTASTIC! The Bible is totally awesome! I love the gold pages, and the way the bottom corner of the cover is bending down - like it's a really well-read Bible! You did a great job - now smile and give yourself a big ol' pat on the back! You deserve it!

This cake is beautiful!!! I can't wait until my Bible looks as loved as that one! I swear it looks like you put my pastor's Bible right on top of your cake--so real!
Great work!
