I have got to do a baby shower cake this weekend and she wants the initials of the baby on the top of the cake out of cookies. I have seen this done, but can someone tell me how and what type of cookies and icing to use.

thanks

I use sugar cookies when I put them on a stick. You will need to make them thick, inbetween a 1/4 to 1/2 inch so that when you put the stick in (before you bake) it doesn't come out on the top or the bottom. If it shows a bit patch it with a little more cookie dough. Colorflow (thined down royal icing) or you can use BC and a star tip either will look nice. this should get you started. Good luck icon_biggrin.gif

Use the No Fail Sugar cookie recipe on this site and the Antonia74's royal icing recipe. I roll my cookies out using dowel rods or rolling pin rings to ensure that they are a uniform thickness. These cookies don't spread and they hold their shape. As soon as they come out of the oven insert the stick into the cookie (about 1/4-1/2 way through cookie depending on the size). Decorate and let your icing dry overnight. There is a great tutorial on this site as well. http://www.cakecentral.com/article54-How-To-Bake--Decorate-Cookies.html hope this helps. If you have any questions you can PM me. As far as sticking the cookies into the cake... Im clueless... I only do cookies, no cakes!

I just found a tutorial that used the No Fail recipe w/ royal icing. They looked fantastic. It was interesting, they actually waited to put the stick in till after the cookie was baked. I've never tried to put them in after so....Anyhow, I've always just used sugar cookies & BC. I haven't used the No Fail recipe myself, but have heard great things about it (I'm not happy w/ my cookie recipe so I've been looking for a new one). As far as placing the cookies on the cake, I just eyeball it and stick 'em in there!
Here's the link to that tutorial if you're interested.

And to the No Fail recipe:
