Do any of you have any project ideas for beginners in cake decorating? I'm self teaching myself, but I need PROJECTS. I looked in the Wilton book and most of those seemed advance. Please post pictures, instructions, and tools needed if that is not asking too much.

OR

If you know of a good book for beginning projects, please post!

What kind of tools do you have? You could do a cake with some cute swirls on top or drop flowers. Or you could pipe some clowns (need to buy the heads).
There is a smaller booklet that wilton puts out for beginning cake decorating. Its a yellow 5X8 boolet. I've seen it at walmart.

My first cakes I tried the cornelli lace and a frozen buttecream transfer. For the FBCT there is a tutorial in the articles section.

For a long time, I was self-taught too and I found my library to be an excellent resource. Check out books on cake decorating & baking and read thru them carefully.... search this site - read thru the articles.

Do you have bags, tips, etc? Get a cake pan with straight sides and an offset spatula. Make a cake and some frosting and start by mastering the art of frosting a cake without getting crumbs in it.... I have been doing this for 3 years and still have some trouble with that part.

Once I took classes ( Wilton ) they helped a lot..... I have noticed that so many people who are self-taught ( in anything ) have holes.... there are just things that we don't know that people who took classes know and as much as I thought I knew, I didn't.

The other thing is to check out the Wilton cake decorating VHS tapes at your library. I still check these out periodically to refresh my memory.

Do you know how to bake? icon_smile.gif

You can get the Wilton class instruction books on ebay. I found several merchants that sell all 3 together.

The classes do offer a lot if you can work it out.
