i am starting on making my first cake in the morning. Well I say first, it is my first that doesn't come out of the box. It's for my sons 4th birthday. I am doing a two layer Lightning McQueen cake with Buttercream icing. Does anyone have any tips for me? icon_eek.gif

What kind of cake are you making?? Are you familiar with icing a cake with buttercream icing?

What size cake are you making? Are you using the Wilton pan??

Lets just say that my first cake was a disaster. I did use the wilton pan and baking the cakes went fine. However, I also used the wilton icing color set that went with the pan and it was horrible. I couldn't get the colors to come out right. The red turned out pink after using almost a whole jar of color on 1/4 c of icing and the black turned out charcoal on about the same amount. I was very disappointed and ended up going to Wal-Mart and buying a sheet cake before his party. I was told by the bakery at Wal-Mart that this is the exact reason they don't use Wilton products. I have never heard anything bad about them, however, I am very disappointed.

yeah there are alot of complaints with red & black. its very hard to get those colors. i think alot on here use americolor but i think you still need alot. to get red i've read posts that people are using cherry koolaid but i'm not sure about getting black besides using alot of color. when i needed black for an FBCT i bought the wiltong decorating icing in the tube. goodluck with the cake.

I have use both Wilton and Americolor and like debbie2881 said you need a lot. I have found out if you have chocolate buttercream it will take the black coloring better. As far as getting a red color I use Wilton's red no taste and use almost the entire bottle. That way at lease the icing won't be bitter.

also you gotta realize that both of those colors will darken overnight. They are still a pain to do though!
