Im making a cake for work - different types to increase my experience and repetoir. This time I am making a mini wedding cake - as for 60 people at work. I was thinking of making a 12inch and 8 inch stacked cake. I also want to do either embroidery or scrolls on it. I am also a huge fan of swags.

Do any of you have pics of things you can share? I was thinking of putting fondant roses on top.

Please help - also tips on how to do the embroidery and scrolls would be good too.

yeah i have done that - but realise that it is not what I am after - lol. I am after like that delicate piping work like what is on the cake when you go to home - the head cake.

DYKWIM? Thanks for helping

You can use terms like "AND" when you search the gallery and it will combine two different search topics (didn't know that myself until just now when I tried it).

I searched "mini wedding AND brushed embroidery" and these are a few things it gave me:

yep - definately not the brushed embroidery I am looking for.

Thanks for clarifying this for me. I am more after the fine sort of piping that is done with simple lines and dots to make a picture of flowers etc. I know what scrolls are but do you do these free hand or do you use a guide of some sort?

Can you tell I am really new to this - self taught since June this year.

some people do scrolls free hand and Wilton makes a kit that has scroll pattern presses that you can use for guidelines. Here's a link:

I looked at your photos. You do beautiful work!

Thanks - BTW how do I do that piping on the side of that cake Randel did?

I made a cake for a friend's bridal shower using embroidery techniques (see it here... http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&pid=37385). Since my hand is not quite steady enough for piping beautiful lines of scrolls, I used the Wilton kit that Tiffysma described --love it! I imprinted the decorations I wanted and then piped #2 dots over the imprint. I find this to be the easiest way to get the most accurate scroll. Before I did the dots, I tried piping a #1 tip line over the imprints, but the lines came out too wavy/bumpy. I free-handed the monogram with a small star tip. I also find that using a small star tip is sometimes easier when drawing scrolls, as you don't notice slight imperfections (like you do with a #1 or 2 tip line).

To do scroll work on the sides of cakes, I prop the cake up on top of a stand, or other tall item (carefully, though! Don't want it to topple!). I like to use that rubbery rug pad/shelf-liner material to put under my cake, just to make sure it doesn's slide off the stand. Then when I sit next to the table, the cake is a little higher than eye level, which makes it easier to control the flow for scroll work.

HTH! Good luck and be sure to post the finished product icon_smile.gif

I have quite a few cakes that look like Randel's too in my photo album... I just call that kind of work scroll work. I use a #2 tip usually, and maybe a #3, and just free hand. If you have any specific questions, PM me and I'll be happy to help. Good luck!
