HI

I've kind of gotten myself into a little bind. I really need help making a book cake. I was thinking of a closed book (it's a bible) on top of another cake (needs to feed a lot) Could somebody please tell me how to do the book part. I really would like it to look as realistic as possible. How do you do the binding - the curve and the pages to make it look like pages, what about the back cover and front cover over hang, what is that?
Please help cake is due tomorrow morning and I haven't even baked them yet (very last minute order) and I leave on holidays tomorrow, I know I should have declined the order but I hate doing that and if this cake goes well, this man owns two restaurants and caters a lot of parties, golf tournaments, weddings, kids parties, to all of the mines out here and there are several, christmas parties so if all goes well he'll hire me for all of the cakes!
Oh how I hope this goes well!

I know I can count on CC!

Thanks so much!

Tammy

I would probaby do the cover (if it has an image on it) as either an edible image or a FBCT if it was me. The binding can be shaped when you frost it (or use fondant). On frosting, I run a fork along the sides of the cake after I smooth it to make the effect of pages, then pat it a little with my finger to smooth out any roughness. Good luck! I'm sure others will have a lot more (and even better) advice on this one.

you could accordian pleat your fondant for the pages roll thin and adhear to the page sides first then do the cover overlapping the pages just a bit . If you are looking to date the pages a little you can use a little gold dust or a mixture of yellow and browm and paint.... hope this helps

How do you do the cover of the book? It is bigger than the actual cake, it hangs over a bit....

The cover is fondant, just looks like it was cut larger than the cake and the edges smoothed. The bottom looks like 9 x 13 to me. Looks like you could use buttercream for the "pages" part, using a fork or comb type tool to make it look like pages, then the cover would be fondant, molded (with your hands) to look like a book cover.

The link you put up sends me to a heart shaped mother's Day cake. Anyway, maybe this is what you are looking for? She said that she did the covers with chocolate. You could PM her.

Decide on the size of the rectangle you want for the book. Cut cake
board(s) the same size as the book. Place cake on board(s). Roll a strip of white/off white fondant the width and length of the 3 page sides. Apply to 3 sides of cake and use the edge of a ruler or the non-sharp side of a knife blade to indent for "pages". Roll fondant on the thick side for the cover. The cover should be one piece that includes the spine and top and should be about 1/4th inch larger than the width and height of the cover to provide overhang. Apply to cake. Put cake on top of bottom cake and paint/decorate. You can just press gently along the back edge of the book cover to get the seam at the spine. I've rolled small snakes to make spine decorations, too.

Hope this helps. You can see some books in my photos
