I really hate to ask a dumb question but..... what is a smash cake? I am really new to all this - I love decorating for my family and have finally started for friends. My dream is to open my own bakery. I love CC and am really glad I stumbled on this website. You are all really talented and I have learned so much in just this last week or so. And yes - I am addicted!!!
I keep seeing smash cake and I have no idea what it is... will someone enlighten me please???
Mel
I had never heard that term until I came to CC, but I think I know what it is. For a small child's birthday, they are given a little cake to play with (and smash). That way they get to enjoy it without messing up the big cake.
A smash cake is a small individual cake you give to a child primarily for a 1st birthday. It serves 2 purposes as far as I know.
1. They can destroy the entire thing.
2. Small children don't know how to blow out candles, giving them their own cake allows them to blow out their candel without spitting on the rest of the cake.
I made my daughter a smash cake for her 1st four birthdays. It is also another way to be creative.
I am not a pro, so there could be other reasons to make them too. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the imput - for some reason I was thinking it was a certain recipe or something
Now I get it! They were all so creative I was confused - my kids got "plain jane" cakes to destroy
.
