I have never used canned frosting, I have always used my mom's buttercream. A friend gave me 6 tubs of canned frosting she got on sale. Is there a reason no one ever uses it? If so, is there anything I can do to make it useable, I hate to see it go to waste. Thanks

I've never used it on my cakes but I think it would be to soft to use for decorating. You might try adding some powdered sugar to thicken it a little bit.

What brand and flavor is it?
I don't feel that you can do a whole lot with canned frosting. I have used the chocolate for outlines on FBCTs and you could probably color any white to use for them too.
The Wilton brand is supposed to be thick enough to make decorations with but I've never tried it.

It is very soft for decorating and after making so much home-made buttercream, I just don't think it tastes very good.

You won't find many people that use it on here simply because it isn't suitable for decorating. But just to slap some frosting on a cake with a flavor you like would be the perfect use for them!!

I remember someone posted on here once that they mixed a can of frosting with some powdered sugar (either 1 or 2 pounds) and it makes molding clay. Does anyone know for certain?

I guess I would be curious if you truely can use canned frosting for FBCT, besides just using chocolate for the outlines.

It's good for frosting a pan of brownies, and it's easy to use to frost a batch of cupcakes if you don't want to do the tip 1M swirls on top.

I think I read where some people use it as an ingredient in their cake balls also, you could do a search on the word "canned" and maybe find some more ideas on this site.

hth!

Has anyone ever mixed buttercream and canned frosting? For instance take regular buttercream and chocolate canned frosting and mixed to get chocolate buttercream? I haven't tried it, I'm just curious as to what would happen icon_smile.gif

I had a can in my pantry so I used it as filling to use it up. I've never tried thickening it to use it for decorating but if it would work that would be a better way to use it up.

I use canned frosting sometimes just as the base icing on my cakes...only because I love the taste of the one I use. I use my own icing recipe for decorating though because I find the canned icing too soft. I have never been able to find a recipe of buttercream icing that I like as much or more as the canned one I get.
