Here's an early bump. You can ice while frozen but don't know if the black will run .

Anyone out there know if the black will run or should I wait til cake is thawed out to even apply the black squares? So if I just ice my cake now and just wait til it thaws out and then put the black on will that be ok? What is this sweating people talk about?

Please Help me....

I am sure that will work. Infact I almost always frost a cake frozen. I feel like I get a better result because the cake is cold. I am not an expert so I could be wrong, but I think you should be ok.

How are you putting on the black squares? Fondant cutouts, piped buttercream?

The "sweating" that you've read about refers to the condensation from moisture in the air onto your cold cake.

If you ice it while frozen, it's more likely to get wet from condensation, which can cause colors to run, if you put any colored decoration on while it's still cold or wet.

If you're piping the black squares with buttercream (or even if you're using fondant, I would guess) you should probably wait until the cake comes to room temp and is completely dry.

Yeah I am putting black buttercream squares on it... it is for a race track.... so I should not ice the whole thing at all til completly dry? OR go ahead and ice but wait to put the black squares on?

I have iced cakes frozen, too, and the cake turns out very well. I'm also not sure about the black running. I would thing if there is any sweating or moisture from the cake itself, it would stay "inside" ....meaning it wouldn't seep out into the frosting and wreak havoc. But as we know, cakes and frosting have a mind of their own sometimes!! )o: Sorry I couldn't help more but would be interested to find out if it works out for you (fingers crossed).

Since I'm new to this group can someone tell me what "bump" means? I've been trying to figure it out and now it's bothering me that I don't know what it means !!! Thanks everyone.

I've never iced a cake frozen, but I think that from what others have posted, you'll be ok to do the white icing while it's frozen. The sweating, if you have any, will be from room moisture condensing on the cold icing (cold because it's put on a frozen cake), so wait until it comes to room temp and is dry to do the black piping.

auntsushi, "bump" just means that someone wanted to move the thread back to the top of the list in the forum. It can be done by posting information, or sometimes if the person doing the bumping doesn't have anything to add to the discussion but wants to bump it for someone else, they'll just post "bump" to do that.

Bump is when you post a reply to a topic and then it "bumps" the topic to the CC home page as a "Latest Forum Topic". (I wondered that for a while too when I first joined.)

The only time I had to freeze a cake I waited till thawed to frost and in your situation I would because you don't want to take the chance especially with black icing to ruin your cake. I'm just part of the better safe than sorry crowd.

A bump is where you post to the topic again to push it back to the top of the list so you have another chance for more people to see it again and therefore get your answer or more answers to your questions.

I always frost frozen, and i've never had a problem with sweating. if you are worried at all, you can hold off putting the black buttercream squares on until later. I tend to put my cake back in the refrigerator in between sections/segments - i find it is easier to decorate.
